I haven’t seen this shit in YEARS, but there’s a marathon on SciFi right now. I remember loving the first Highlander movie, then the franchise took a horrible nosedive with the crappy, awful sequels.
But IMHO, the TV series got it mostly right. No aliens. No pseudoscientific explanations. Just Duncan McLeod and a bunch of other mysterious strangers, fighting it out over the centuries with no known reason or explanation.
Sure, it’s dated and cheesy, and the shred-guitar score is laughable, but I like it.
Every hour, on the hour, the cat looks at me like I’m fucking insane, because I’m air-guitar-ing it up to the theme.
My favorite Highlander game is called “Holy Shit Who Is THAT?”
The winner is the guest star who gets me to exclaim that at the top of my lungs.
Current leader: Joe Pants (if that really IS him).
Looks like I’m going to work tomorrow instead of today.
Methos was the most awesome guy on that show. He didn’t fuck around with tradition, he just killed people. And if you pissed him off, you might as well just lie down on the train tracks now.
Yeah. Other than the first movie, anything more than an hour long that bore the name “Highlander” sucked horribly, horribly bad, and in fact, I am more than half willing to pretend they never existed.
Ah yes. They did manage to Scrappy Doo the Highlander franchise. Never a good strategy. The problem with having a character who is a less-competent comic-relief sidekick is that we are NOT going to believe that he’s really going to be a Force To Be Reckoned With.
I thought he tried to avoid fights whenever possible. He was one of the better actors on the show. And he was a medical doctor before he became an actor.
He was a great villain!
Highlander was the first message board I ever posted on and visited regularly.
My favorite Highlander villain was Kalas from the early seasons. Creepy, loathsome and unpredictable. Oh, and the movies. There was the first one, the third one and later ones. The one between 1 and 3 does not exist. Worst Sean Connery movie ever, including Zardoz.
The TV show did jump the shark eventually, but the first few seasons were pretty good. Haven’t watched them in years, but I think we have season 1-4 on VHS around here somewhere.
I got into this show in the second season. Just watched a couple of the earlier episodes on Hulu. They were much more awkward than I remembered the series being. Richie especially. I think they got a lot better by the time I started watching.
I knew the show was gold when Joan Jett guest starred in season 1.
I totally had the hots for Duncan’s on-again-off-again immortal girlfriend Amanda. She was a good character, too, but they spun her off into her own series (The Raven) that really sucked.
