An associate of mine said there are Welsh legends of female knights of the round table and of Guinevere being a warrior. I can find none. Does anyone know if there is any legend of female knights of the round table or of Guinevere being a warrior?
Pure peachfuzz.
Of course, there were British Warrior Queens, Boudicca being the best-known example. But these predate the Romano-British Era, much less Arthur.
My wife is a university professor and a medievalist. She found the recent Bruckheimer movie that protrayed Guinevere as a Celtic warrior very silly indeed.
While it’s possible that Arthur might have had a historical precursor, for the most part the Arthur stories are just that … stories. People in the middle ages were always adding new characters and embellishments much as people do in the fan fic community today. Guinevere doesn’t even appear in the oldest stories, nor does Launcelot, or the Grail. It’s just Arthur and a couple of his buddies (Kay and Gawain, I think) cracking heads.
