11/08/08 This is not a gun control thread.

11/30/08 Guns as “protection”. (From the Government)

I haven’t counted or anything, but it seems to me that these alone (turned up from a 30-day search of GD and The Pit) are more than we’ve had in any given 30 day period in the last two years (last spring came kinda close).

Why do I keep hearing the matra, “Obama’s not coming for your guns?” Do you think that if you repeat it often enough people will believe it?

The crying shame of it is that you are correct. Plenty of Fudds will throw everyone else under the bus.

Heller spelled it out: We Have The Right.

They seem to be responding, “Yes, you have the right. Now, we’re going to do our level best to insure that you can only practice your right on the 29th of February, if the moon is full, you are licensed, your gun is registered, you have paid the Daniel P. Moynihan Memorial 10,000% Ammunition Accountability Tax, and then, only if we feel like it.”

It’s not the number of threads, it’s the, well, density of the threads, and quite frankly, their tone, that concerns me. I’ve been around long enough to have participated in some very rancorous GCDs; between myself and others (many have passed on from here to boards more conducive to their views) we’ve fought an uphill battle for 10 years to stamp out the blatant ignorance about firearms, the 2nd Amendment, crime, what have you.

And in the past 30 days, I have seen more ad hominem, vitriol, and just plain fucking ignorance (sadly, from otherwise intelligent, amiable posters) about guns, and gun owners, than I’ve seen on this message board in a very long time.

You call us “paranoid gun nuts,” and expect us to buy your line of bullshit about our President-Elect, a man who hasn’t hesitated a nanosecond before voting “Hell, Yes!” to any piece of gun control legislation put before him…

…and then turn around and launch more gun control threads in a 30 day period than I’ve seen in any other in 10 fucking years?!

Yeah. You’re really convincing people not to worry one least little bit about the intentions of President-Elect Obama, and a Democratically controlled Congress.

But I don’t want you to stop; oh no! Far from it.

BRING IT ON

Start a thread a day, for the next 4 years. Two, even.

Trot out every tired, hackneyed argument you can think of. Trot out Kellerman and “43 times!” Again.

Rehash the tired old argument that no one ever really uses guns in self defense.

Restate again and again about how “self defense” is only the juvenille fantasies of dickless men, and women who wish they were men, stroking their substitute phalli.

Trumpet the “11 children a day!” war cry from the rooftops.

Roll out more and more research from The Brady Institute, even as you pour scorn, and derision, upon other pro-gun studies, you bastions of impartial and enlightened reasoning!

Assemble your hordes by the millions* and march on Washington, spewing your lies, your filth, your empty rhetoric on broadcast television.

*some settling may occur in shipping

Fall upon and devour anyone who breaks ranks! (Sorry Dinsdale. Do you want a last cigarette? A blindfold?)

Insinuate with every breath you take, every word that you commit to print and internet, that we’re racists, homophobes, anti-semites, Nazis, Brownshirts-In-Waiting, The Hordes-of-Godly-Righteousness, marching across the land with the Bible in one hand and our guns in the other, smiting the queers and the coons and the Red and the Jews*.

*Thanks, Roger.

And do you know why I want you to do this?

Us gun owners, and pro-2 Ad. types, we’ve had it pretty easy the last 8 years. Too easy.

At the height of the Assault Weapons Ban, the NRA boasted 4 million+ active members. People who wrote letters to the legislators, and governors. People who marched, and wore pro-2 Ad. shirts and hats, pins and button, with pride.

We whupped AARP’s ass right outta the “top lobbyist” spot even as the Baby Boom of The Greatest Generation reached its semicentennial.

Today? I doubt the NRA could rally 2 million. We’ve become lax in our vigilance; victims of our own successes.

And now that our attention is down, the jackals again begin stalking the perimeter.

So go ahead, and start some more gun control threads.

The NRA could use a kick-in-the-ass, and some fresh blood. As soon as more people again see what you people are really all about, see what your President-Elect really has in store as soon as he feels it’s safe to dip his toe in the water, the sooner it will stop.

Again.

And when it comes around, again, I’ll be right back here. Waiting, with a smile on my face.

Blink, motherfucker.

I dare ya.

Preach it, brother.

Pass me another box of 9mm…looks like its gonna be a long night.

Yeah . . . ExTank, you’re exactly the kind of person I want to be walking around carrying a loaded weapon.

I’ve got a tagline for your crusade against the libs and their gun snatchin’ evil.

Guns: They really feel like a big penis.

You can put that on bumper stickers if you like.

Okay, I fall on the 2nd amendment side of the debate, but I am really frickin tired of this argument. SHUT UP ABOUT METAL PENISES! Gah! The vast majority of gun owners are not feeling chronically unmasculine, and your stupid Freudian bullshit wasn’t tolerated past high school, let alone on a message board devoted to fighting ignorance. Seriously. You sound like high schoolers. Quit it.

I highly recommend reading the OP in the voice of Casey (Adam Baldwin) from Chuck. I think I just snorted coffee into places where it really, really shouldn’t go.

(No, seriously, I’m assembling a KinoFlow lamp on the desk beside me. I don’t look forward to plugging it in.)

To amuse myself at work today, I posit the following list of voices:

  • Clint Eastwood anno 1982.
  • Animal Mother from Full Metal Jacket.
  • Watt from A Knight’s Tale.
  • Olive from Pushing Daisies
  • The guy from Fisher King.
  • Foghorn Leghorn.
  • Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation.

sigh

  • Gukumatz,
Owns two shotguns, a rifle, a longbow and a compound bow, is licenced to hunt and spends at least three hours a week on the shooting range, yet still think the gun-nut crowd in the US are a bunch of shrill, hysterical pussies.

No you have me wrong. I wasn’t saying they were using guns to stand in for their penises due to feeling inadequate.

I’m saying they are repressed homosexuals who really want to hold a big penis in their hands and feel its power.

Actually I was just kidding.

I wasn’t saying either one, I was just coming down on the “shrill hysterical pussies” side of the equation. Thanks Gunkumaz, you said it better than me.

Bang-on. It’s like accusing people of latent homosexuality - it’s a substitute for an actual argument while you stall for time.

My guess is some Democratic blog somewhere run by a 14 year-old got a bunch of people on here (who seem to get their news exclusively from blogs) full of piss and vinegar to start airing “talking points” for preparing the masses for the rollout of “Joe Biden’s Assault Weapons Ban 2 - In Your Face, Bitches.” Otherwise, I’d like to know the reason for the recent interest so many Dopers have in suddenly rehashing the same arguments that have been debunked for 9 years on here.

I think the overal noise is based largely on the Supreme Court’s decision to support the 2nd amendment and strike down the DC gun ban, which will reverberate across the country. That was a monumental decision that will shape and frame anti-gun efforts for generations to come. Already some of the Chicago burbs have broken ranks with Daley’s anti gun machine to repeal their own handgun ownership laws, and this solid and truthful assertation of rights scares the shite out of the Brady crowd. Obama does not look like the type of Dem to worry about such things so there’s really a new day dawning on the respected right of the people to keep and bear arms in this country. Good.

Those are Corvette owners, btw.

Gun owners don’t want a penis to hold, they want to shoot yours off!

Seriously, I’m mostly behind the OP except…I’m not feeling the “Obama is going to take away our guns” vibe, especially when most of my gun-owning friends that rail about this cannot point to a valid citation as to why they think so. I mostly get those forwarded emails that ah, don’t really pass the smell test.

I am in favor of gun ownership by responsible individuals, I tend to vote Republican…but even I can see this for what it is, right? A bunch of bullshit?

Where is this wrong? Obama cannot just “take away guns”, nor can he really alter much what’s already in place…right?

I’m not getting the fear. Plus, it isn’t as if Obama doesn’t have real work to do, like addressing his campaign promises like figuring out the economy, or ending the war in Iraq.

Well, Obama’s own website does say:

It can be found here under Crime and Law Enforcement.

But that was 5 months ago. What’s the root cause of the sudden spike right around and after the Election?

:dubious: You may want to read some of the threads the OP linked.

Obama will sure as shit will sign any anti-gun legislation which crosses his desk. And with Joe “Never Met a Gun Ban I Didn’t Like” Biden as second in command of the Executive Branch, it’s simply no stretch of the imagination to see him saying to the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate “send it to us and it’ll be a slam-dunk.” And most importantly, as I’m reminded on Preview, Obama’s own freaking website trumpets that he will ban some guns.

Gun sales are through the roof, stores can’t keep anything in stock. AR15 manufacturers are 2-3 months behind. Regular capacity AR and AK magazines (20-30 rounds) sell out as soon as they open the box.

I hope people are joining the NRA in similar numbers, in spite of the perception that they aren’t particularly aggressive in protecting gun rights.

A Democratic congress with a Democratic president will go after guns. It’s not Obama particularly, it’s just one of those things. Would you take anyone seriously that said “I don’t get the McCain/Palin will go after abortion rights vibe”?

And you rail against things why? Obama is gonna take yer guns anyway?

Could be that, or it could be the rash of news articles on people being shot. On second thought it must be the conspiracy.

Well, first off, I’ve noticed that nothing is every REALLY ‘debunked’…not to the faithful (of whatever faith we are talking about). Also, I think that a lot of Dems on this board (as well as a lot not on this board) see the current political situation as a chance to push through their most cherished positions. The goody bag has been open, it was an early Christmas, the Republican’s are in disarray and full retreat, and now is the time when the majority of the American people have finally come to realize the joys of all things liberal. If this sounds familiar it’s because it is…we heard the same thing when the Republican’s took charge and THEY though the goody bag was open and they could do what they wanted.

So…I think the gun issue is being trotted out again because, like with many cherished liberal positions, some folks feel the time is right for CHANGE™. Frankly I think that the shock is going to be nearly as great as it was for the Republican’s when the liberal Dems find out that some of those cherished positions really aren’t all that beloved by the majority of American’s, and that really the reason the Dems are now Large and In Charge has more to do with how that majority feel about what the Republican’s did when they were in the drivers seat than it does with how that majority feel about said cherished positions. Much like the mistake the Republican’s made when the converse was true.

Should be interesting times here on the board though.

To the OP, no thanks.

You’re able to have your guns, just as I am able to not allow them in my home and choose to not be around you if you have one on you. (you in the general sense)

No one said anything about a conspiracy - except you, of course. Perhaps you’d like to play a nice game of Solitaire?
