If we were to have a competition between these two millitary hardasses, R. Lee Ermey’s “Sgt. Hartman” and Michael Hogan’s “Saul Tigh”, who could Out-Marine/Out-DI the other?
I think it’d be an interesting contest, Ermey has the advantage of actually having been an actual U.S. Marine Drill Instructor, and is world renouned for his Sgt. Hartman character, the “Gunny Sgt” has llent his voice and characterizations to everything from millitary/action films to sci-fi films, to cartoons (Family Guy and Invader Zim spring to mind)
Micheal Hogan’s best known role here in the U.S. is Cmdr. Saul Tigh, XO of Galactica, a hard-drinkin, hard-fightin, grumpy ol’ hardass, i see a definite Sgt. Hartman influence in Hogan’s characterization of Tigh
So, which one of them could Out-DI the other?
after watching some clips of Ermey in his various roles, i’d have to actually side with Hogan on this one, Ermey’s Hartman is so ingrained into the media as the epitome of the Marine Drill Seargant that he’s almost become a parody of himself, in fact, in the barracks sequence in FMJ where Hartmann is verbaly berating the recruits, i sensed that he was having a hard time not cracking himself up, there was always the tiniest bit of a laugh at the back of his voice
conversely, when Hogan’s in character as Tigh and he’s off on a rant, he seems genuinely menacing, you feel he’s moments away from snapping…
so, who would win the DI contest, Maggots?!?
