guys (and girls who shave their faces)

Seven minutes to shave? While I don’t try to set any land speed records for applying a blade to my face, I still manage to get the job done in about three minutes or less.

Relather? Why bother? There should be plenty of soap left on your face to redistribute.

MrO mentioned one really good thing. If possible, let your beard grow out over the weekend. The heavier growth will dull your razor a little more quickly, but your facial skin gets a well deserved break.

Has anyone else heard that men who shave tend to look less aged because the act of shaving tends to exfoliate the face, thereby give one a younger look?

Shave? Gave it up years ago, thanks.

Okay… mainly because it got tedious.

Um. I always though that men who shave tend to look younger because they don’t have beards… Leastways, people think I’m about 37 with a beard, and I get carded when I shave it off… Both are about equally wrong, for what it’s worth.

{much snippage}

Agreed! Even on “tougher” areas of skin, those chemical defoliants are bad. I tried one on my arms once. The hairs stayed, but the chemicals ate away the top layers of skin around each hair.

Imagine your upper arms covered with tiny painful open oozing sores for a day, then tiny tight scabs. And think about how many things you do in the course of a day pull at the skin on your upper arms…

Or not.

I figure I’ve done some of this research, so the rest of you don’t have to.

I’ve heard the same things Zenster. Men who shave daily radically exfoliate the skin, reducing wrinkles. There was a minor flap about a year ago when some plastic surgeon endorsed women shaving regularly to get the same exfoliation benefits, I think it was on Oprah or Montel or something. No cite whatsoever, sorry.

I do remember thinking “hmmm” and then looking curiously at my parents the next time I saw them. Dad’s 65 and has the mucho crinkly forehead thing, Mom’s 60 and has deep bracketing smile grooves, they’re eyes were pretty equally wrinkled. So, maybe there’s something to it, maybe not.

I use Trac II razors on a heavy metal handle. The substantial weight seems to make it much easier to guide the razor around and get a shave without cuts.

Thanks to Queer Eye and Kyan Douglas.
Until this show, I never knew there were other shaving options other than foam (in cans or using a brush).
However, I found some gel type stuff in a tube (non-foaming) and tried that. I have NEVER had such a close shave. My hair grows in all directions and there isn’t really a grain to shave against. This stuff is so good that I’ll never use the old foam again.

I, also, use a Mach 3 razor and like it even though the blades are extremely expensive (although I can use a single cartridge for a week or more). Shick has just released a FOUR blade razor that I might try, although I might just wait for the 72-blade razor that Gillete will probably in response to Shick’s latest entry.

Something those of you who regularly cut yourselves or don’t get good shaves might want to try is the Schick Tracer system. It’s a twin blade, like the Gillette, but the blades flex along the Z-axis, rather than the Y-axis, geometrically speaking. Meaning, if you put your thumb on the blade, you can push it toward the handle, rather than just having the blades flip up and down. This seems, in my experience with it, to allow the blade to adjust to the contours of my face more readily, which means less re-shaving of the same spots and, therefore, less irritation.

Oh, and for those keeping score, I’ve always shaved against the grain, as well as with it, and have never had problems with either cuts or ingrown hairs. YFMV (your face may vary)

I never get any cuts during my shaves,

i shave once a week because i am lazy to do it each day and i am a student so it doesn’t matter if i have a little beard.

I use mach 3 with foam.

finally i shave very slowly and always downwards (except the neck: upwards)
