Any idea when and why Speedos went out of style for surfers? When you see old photos from the early days of surfing, the guys are usually in Speedos as they stand next to their 10 foot wooden boards.
An apology to Euro-dopers - I was generalizing and obviously not meaning Europe in it’s entirety is a slave to speedos. There are always brief shining spots of enlightenment! 
In Qld we call them “DTs” for “Dick Togs”.

Hmmm… I’m not sure we may be talking about the same thing. I think that what is meant by “speedo” (isn’t that supposed to be a trademark?) is the skimpy “banana hammock” type swimsuit, that emphasizes your, er, package. As seen on competitiveswimmers and body-builders. (And the reason Americans are against it, is too many of us are 20-30lbs overweight and know it.) IIRC the swimsuit from the 50s and 60s was tight, but actually covered your butt and hips completely and pretended to have vestigial “legs”.
No, I will not wear a “speedo”. Not until after a massive workout regimen, at least…

Come summer at Manly Beach, there are men of all, and I do mean ALL, shapes, sizes and levels of hirsuteness wearing Speedos. Frankly, I find the lack of body affectation endearing.
There are a lot of slang names for Speedos here. My favourite used to be “slug pants” or “sluggos”. Now it’s “budgie smugglers”!
The only male I’ve ever seen that actually looked good in a Speedo was David Duchovny, in an X-Files episode. It was a red one that showed off his package nicely. Yum.
Unfortunately, nudebeachguide.com seems to think “Northeast” means “NYC area and north”, doggonit.
I tried to Google for something covering the mid-Atlantic, but no luck.

So,it appears that the “bana hammock”/“cock sock” ain’t too popular!As others have mentioned, if you want to swim, the speedo styleis very comfortable, and dries off in minutes. The style currently favored (board shorts) take forever to dry.
I don’t know about that…my shorts are water repellent. They are dry practically as soon as you get out of the water. BTW mine don’t come down to my knees, so maybe they don’t qualify as “board shorts”
I have other pairs of short though that I do wear a boxer type spandex brief underneath. When that added support is needed. They are not as comfortable but not too bad. The board shorts often come off in those cases.
Perhaps I might explain…I used to work out a lot I still work hard and have maintained w/ some exception to the Abs. Tight fitting apparel (ie: t-shirts & jockey’s) have an elastic seam or edge if you will. I have killer thighs and my neck and biceps aren’t small either. It’s like wearing a tourniquet.

I haven’t worn anything to a beach since the late 80s, and can most certainly say that I don’t see myself ever, ever, visiting a beach which requires cloting. That said, should I ever find myself at a beach which requires clothing, I’d wear something comfortable, I guess. Speedos would be more uncomfortable that board shorts, so I’d wear board shorts.

Let’s see, I keep my speedo at the pool where I swim laps. I swim laps with a group from 5:30 am to 7:00 am. My wife wakes up sometime between 7 and 8. I can’t imagine I’ll ever have my picture taken in it.
