Maybe I’m just weird but I hate to see someone working out in khakhi shorts, or jeans, or, in one particular case, a sweat-streaked light parka with the hood drawn tightly around the face. IMO only the following materials are appropriate for working out in: swimtrunk-type material, cotton, or spandex if you’ve got the bod. That’s it.
So I’m guessing my snow parka and tutu combination is no good, then?
When I see people working out in street clothes, it tells me that they’re not taking their gym time seriously. (Although in fairness, it could be that they just didn’t have a good set of gym clothes on hand, and decided to squeeze in some workout time.)
The bigger problem I’ve seen is that these people are typically just lounging around on the gym equipment, using the stairsteppers, treadmills, exercise bikes, etc. in a most leisurely manner. This can be quite aggravating to people who are properly attired and waiting in line to use the equipment.
I work out in khaki shorts when that’s all I’ve got. Why does it bother you?
I played softball against a guy who played in black jeans, a black t-shirt and cowboy boots. He was great, too. I’m shocked he didn’t get heatstroke in 90 degree heat with super high humidity, but hey, it worked for him.
That’s ridiculous. When I exercise at the gym, I take it as seriously as anyone. I don’t lounge around, I do the best I can. I wear at t-shirt, shorts, sneakers. Why should I buy “special” clothes? And what business is it of anyone else’s anyway?
Lordy. Enter the Curves I go to at any given time and you will find women in slippers, barefeet, one who always comes in wearing her bank vest (complete with name tag)–I cannot imagine being in her line post workout (maybe she works the drive thru), I did once see a 50+ woman wear pajamas to work out, I swear.
There are extremes to be had here–I see no reason to NOT wear old, scruffy T-shirts that are only good for sweating in. I am not one to go out and buy “glamorous” workout clothes.
Shoes are a whole nother story. I look at these women who are working out in Keds or barefeet etc with puzzlement and dismay. I can only imagine that their feet must hurt afterwards.
C’mon. Have you ever seen Kenny without his parka?
A couple of reasons, one bad, and one good.
The bad reason: Because it looks uncomfortable.
The good reason: Typically, ordinary clothes don’t have the same ventilation properties of workout gear. When I see that parka dude working out, his jacket’s always dripping and streaked with sweat. I call that my business since it’s disgusting to look at.
I’ve got no problem with scruffy tees either…that’s what I wear to work out in. T-shirts are a normal thing to work out in. But an old pair of jeans and a jacket is not.
I agree. There’s a lady who comes to my gym wearing tight stretch jeans with a big fashion belt and does aerobics. WTF?
'Course, I’m not even gonna talk about one lady who wears one of those trash-bag like outfits that just make you sweat a lot more.
I’ve seen dudes working out in their jeans, the full saggy-ass kind. Sometimes with their hats on.
I have special workout pants and shorts but I just use any old T-shirt.
I lifted wearing a t-shirt and jeans for about a year. I was there to lose weight, so you didn’t want to see me in sweatpants - trust me. Plus I didn’t have any (cuz fat people shouldn’t wear sweatpants. At least not this one!)…and I wasn’t about to spend $30 on some workout pants when my goal was to NOT to be able to wear the same size in a month as I was wearing that day.
No one ever said anything. I was comfortable. Plus, I had my swimsuit on underneath it so I could work out in the pool afterwards.
When I started running and doing land aerobics tho (and lost alot of weight) I did buy “workout pants” just for the fact that they do not ride up your thighs like shorts or jeans do
I once saw a guy chugging away on a stair-stepper in a three piece suit. He didn’t even bother to take off his jacket.
Agreed. I know some of you say that you’re equally comfortable wearing that kind of attire, but frankly, I find that hard to believe. Is this a judgmental attitude? Perhaps… but I think it’s amply supported by both experience and common sense.
Yesterday I saw a woman on the treadmill wearing sandals and jeans. I thought it was odd- and also a great big old tripping hazard more than anything else.
The gym I go to is not co-ed. There is one woman who routinely shows up in black stretch pants & a blouse. She then strips off the blouse & works out in her bra. What does she plan to do when she leaves? Put the blouse back on & go about her day? Who want’s to smell you after you’ve ran a couple of miles in those pants & underthings. And more to the point, I know we’re all women, but I don’t want to see you jogging in your Hanes underwire for the full-busted woman. The thought of the poking makes me cringe. Invest in a sportsbra.
Sensitive fella, aren’t you?
What about a gold lame jumpsuit with cape?
Keds I can almost see, because maybe she just doesn’t have the money for proper workout shoes. But bare feet? How can the gym personnel even allow that? Seems pretty unsanitary to me.
On the shoes issue, the gym I go to has a safety rule that sneakers or other appropriate athletic shoes must be worn. No sandals. I am positive they’d forbid barefoot, both for the sanitary issue, and so they don’t get sued if you stub your toe or otherwise injure your important feet!
No, they don’t allow squicking at my gym.
