A very valid point that many of the more “racially” aware members of the Dope probably won’t grasp.
I said that someone who’s blind won’t see the painting. You’re paraphrasing me as saying someone who doesn’t see the painting is blind.
You insist, so your grade is lowered to an F. Class dismissed.
No, what you said is the second way around.
A guy “didn’t see the painting” and you said “ah, he didn’t see the painting - wouldn’t surprise me if the guy is blind”.
You comment was a speculation that these guys were racist, not about what they suspected. Everyone knows what they suspected; the question is why they suspected it…
I can understand why you would want to back away from what you said. But better yet would be to refrain from saying that type of tripe to begin with.
No it’s not.
The article is rather ambiguous: was it just the blond girl who was “found in a state of neglect, both physically and psychologically”, or were the other children in the same state? If they were, why does the article apparently indicate that it was only the blond girl who was taken into custody?
Jesus Christ.
Greek guy here.
That little girl is “too white” even compared to the general Greek population. The combination of blue eyes, blond hair and complexion like hers is really uncommon here and usually associated with northern Europeans.
The girl basically stood out like a sore thumb amongst the other Romas.
I think it’s annoying when people use “blonde” to emphasize “white”, but in this case, the little girl is VERY blonde, and I think it is the fact that she’s blonde that drew attention. I doubt they would have noticed a white brunette child.
As much as I hate to link to the Daily Mail, thearticle thereis interesting in ways that I am sure the writer did not intend.
Looking at some of the pictures, it does seem possible that the Gypsies are telling the truth. They do seem to have cared for her.
Frankly, the racism of Greeks to the Roma absolutely shocked me when I was there.
This seems to be the best-case scenario for the Roma “parents.” That they were engaging in welfare fraud by claiming multiple non-existant children. The worst-case scanrio, of course, is that they are part of a child-trafficing ring. There doesn’t seem to be any conceivable situation which ends with the Greek cops saying, “Oops! Our bad! These people are fine.” Unless it turns out that they have 10 kids off at summer camp or something, these two are going to jail for something.
The dislike towards Gypsies is not unfounded. They are involved in all types of petty and not so petty crimes. Drugs, guns, forcing their children to panhandle, theft, etc.
Also note that these Roma encampments resemble the Brazilian favelas. The police usually don’t dare enter because the gypsies do not hesitate to open fire against them. These recent raids were conducted by a very strong police force backed by vehicles and riot police.
Thanks for proving AK84 right.
Yeah, my thoughts too. When someone says you’re racist, and you double-down on the racism, it’s not gonna make people think you’re not being racist.
That Dailymail article is pathetic.
If you believe in circular logic, that is.
Good point. The idea of “ethnic purity” is more or less meaningless when you look at the big picture of history. What you see are general trends of appearance with plenty of outliers, many of them likely due to the recent or ancient mixture with other peoples. Iirc it has been shown that Queen Elizabeth II is part Sub-Saharan African (i.e. Black)
Why is it so hard to believe that there just may be a case for abduction when the girl is shown not to be related to the caregivers and the caregivers apparently cannot provide a story that holds under examination of how they came to care for her?
I do not know–I can certainly see a resemblance. At least it appears that the girl has inherited her step-father’s slack-jawed yokelness. Maybe some traits do come from nurture.
Looking at the photos I am already thinking they may have been paid to take care of her by someone for whom an illegitimate child would have been a problem.
The pictures of the child’s room indicates she was well cared for. Very neat and tidy room. Stuffed toys. There’s even a toy box by the bed.
The press reports last week claimed she was found in terrible conditions. Dirty, under nourished. Thats not true at all. She looks very healthy in those photos.
I’m beginning to wonder if she should be separated from the only parents she’s ever known? At least let her stay with them until after the trial. Or the real parents are found and proven with DNA.
