A lot of this is the game of Mercan. It’s a language game, you get points for the number of syllables you can remove from a word or phrase. For instance if you take the phrase “It is in the refrigerator” (9 syllables) and reduce it to “tzinna fridge” (3 syllables) you get 6 points.

In the other direction, a friend of mine once joked that the more syllables you could get into the name Jesus, the better an evangelist you were. juh-HAY-uh suss-uh! :smiley:
