I’ve just had a haircut. As usual, I found it so relaxing and soothing that I almost fell asleep in the chair. Does anyone else find this too? I know others actually find the whole process rather irritating.
Sure. But then, I could doze off at the dentist if they’d only stop talking to me and telling me to move my tongue.
Oh hell yeah. After a long and soothing scalp massage while she washes my hair, me and my hairdresser shoot the shit for an hour, talking and laughing about all kinds of things.
She’s a bit nutty, though. Apparently, she has an “alternative personality” named “Bridget” who comes out when she goes drinking. Not sure I want to see that.
But I love getting a haircut.
The best part is when they wash your hair…if it lasted longer, I’d pass out.
It’s relaxing when I get mine cut. I’ve been going to the same girl for about six years now. She’s really good, and maybe if I had more hair to take care of, I’d be there long enough to doze off. But the wash and cut doesn’t usually take more than 15 minutes.
My favorite part is when they clean up the edges of my hair with the clippers. Very soothing.
Count me in as finding it irratating.
I’m not particularly fond of them, though I do like the after-effects.
Then again, I get mine done with a razor for texture, which borders on painful sometimes. I don’t know anyone who likes it.
I ADORE the head massage you get when your hair gets washed, but I’m having trouble getting the right balance.
Last time i got my haircut, i got nothing, not even a quick rub.
The time before that i was sat in a chair when all of a sudden, and without warning, it started moving. It pummeled and rippled all the way from the top of my neck to my bum which really was a very odd sensation. I then had my head massage from TWO people.
Sensory overload.
Anyone else share my scary chair experience?
I’ve never really enjoyed going to the salon for anything. Thus, my hair typically gets a pro trim once a year or so. I whack off the bangs as needed.
I get tense at the washing station. Can’t quite figure out what I’m supposed to do with my head. I end up with a neck ache 'cuz I don’t know how to relax there. I also hate, hate, hate looking at myself in those damn mirrors. Every single salon mirror makes me look hideous, I kid you not. Somebody is making these darn “ugly” mirrors in an effort to make you want further processes! I’m sure of that.
When I had fake nails, I’d only go about every three-four weeks for a fill, I hated sitting there for an hour while they worked on me. Too much nervous energy I guess. You can’t pick at yourself while they’re doin’ your nails.
Me too
I can only relax when I have a stylist I totally trust. I feel lucky I actually found one with long hair who understands my desire for long hair, and just trims to keep the length. I would not go to a stylist I didn’t trust completely to respect my length. I’m paranoid about the ones who go berserk as soon as their fingers wrap around a pair of shears, who are on a mission to make the whole world short haired.
I find it very relaxing. Indeed, I’ll usually tell the stylist at the beginning, “If I doze off, just poke me.”
Not in the slightest. Haircuts are not relaxing, mostly because I have my glasses off and I have no idea what they’re doing to me. I tolerate them, but they are, as H.G. Wells once said, they are “the most hateful duty of a civilized man.”
There is a chain here in Denver (and I think they’re elsewhere) called Floyd’s in which the stylists shave your neck with warm lather and a straight razor – nice – and they also massage your neck and shoulders with one of those old-school palm machines after the haircut – very, very nice.
Although I’m a big fan of those, I really don’t like getting my hair cut – I never have. I think it’s simply the idea of just sitting there for a length of time that you can’t really do anything except talk to the person cutting your hair, and it’s a big drag if that conversation goes nowhere.
I find it neither stressful nor relaxing. I’ve heard about people nearly falling asleep during the hair-washing scalp massage, but it doesn’t really do anything for me – it doesn’t feel good or bad.
I used to never go to salons: I couldn’t find anyone around here who I could afford and who spoke/understood enough English (what can I say, it’s the truth), so I would just trim my own bangs every now and then. The results were always mixed, but I’ve never been one to do more than wash & dry my hair so I told myself that I didn’t really care about the split ends, lack of shape, etc. But last summer I finally let my best friend’s wife make an appointment for me with the guy she’s been going to for a million years, and now I like getting my hair cut! I finally found a stylist that I like and trust, and it usually winds up being an “outing” with my friend’s wife (sometimes with my friend and his son as well): we go to a salon in Pentagon Row, and typically we make appointments for around 1pm so that there’s time to do a little shopping afterwards. Now I go regularly, about once every 2 months, and I’m even using “product” for the first time in 34 years. I actually get compliments on my hair now!
I go to a place that provides ESPN at every station, plus tons of golf and car magazines. Usually I’m so engrossed in them I hardly notice the haircut.
I did however have a past barber that was the cat’s meow. Nicest guy in the world, little old man, and near the end of the cut he’d put warm shaving cream on the back of my neck and carve it off with a straight razor from my hairline to my collar. You just can’t imagine how wonderful and relaxing that was.
Don’t like 'em. Get them as rarely as possible (once every two months or so). It only takes 15 minutes, and my barber’s a nice guy, but it’s still almost like going to the dentist for me.
No. I’m always tense during them because the hairstylist always tries to give me bangs. I’ve been given bangs now after two haircuts when I specifically brought in a non-bangs picture to work from. You have to watch them like a hawk, and complain at the first sign of inadvertent bangery. No magazine reading for me! I’m on guard duty.
Now I cut my own hair most of the time, and it’s a lot better, though I wouldn’t call it relaxing. Satisfying when it’s done, though.
They’d be okay, if the stylist wouldn’t make small talk.
