Haircutting- straight razor with electric cord

In this YouTube video, the guy is cutting this woman’s hair using a straight razor, but it has an electrical cord attached to it. (Not electric hair clippers, although he does use those at the end of the video.) My hairdresser uses just a regular straight razor on my hair-- what is this thing he’s using? Why would a razor need electricity? (Video is cued to the appropriate spot.)

Looks like a hot razor, like this one: Ultrasonic Hot Razor Hair Cut Heated Vibrating Blade Lightweight Loof Beauty Sys | eBay

Not sure what the benefits are for hair cutting, maybe it helps keep the hair cuticle smooth?

Dang. That’s some good google-fu you’ve got going there. Thanks!

“Ultrasonic…hot…vibrating…” Them’s a lot of features. To me, a vibrating blade sounds like it would give you less control.

Now that you’ve found it, I’m going to do some more searching.

It certainly does say “hot razor” on the razor … I just had to find the frame in the video that showed it clearly…

Features:
Light weight, incredibly easy to use.
Temperature setting up to 120°C after 60 seconds.
Three different possibilities: heat and vibration, heat and cut.
Reduces risk of split ends and creates a blended, textured haircut on hair.
Amazing tool used to blend hair extensions with natural hair.

Here’s one on amazon with questions and comments.

Seems to be one of those you either love it or hate it things.

A teeny-tiny bit of ignorance fought.

A World-War-Two vet once told me about a haircut he got in some far-off place. After the snipping was done, the barber went over it with a candle, singeing the cut hair ends. Apparently, there was a belief that hair is tubular, and all the natural oil will leak out if it’s left unsealed. That belief would explain the hot razor gizmo.

To be clear, hair is not tubular.

BTW the razor in that video is the Ergo Hot Razor. As near as I can figure, it costs about $200.
