Hallowe'en around the world

There are Trick-or-Treaters in the nicer bits of Bombay/Mumbai now.

I lived in Bahrain from 1986-1989 and quite clearly remember Trick-or-Treating with the other kids, but only in the ex-pat heavy areas of Manama (around St. Christopher’s School). I assume this was because there were Americans around, but most of the families there were British and they participated too.

Oddly, when we got back to Britain I never got to go trick-or-treating again, and none of my friends did either.

Trick-or-treating is new to Scotland, but the tradition of going door-to-door on Halloween and getting gifts is not. It’s calledguising .

I’m pretty sure nobody in Ireland does this any more, but in my grandfather’s day, Irish kids went door to door, not on Halloween, but on St. Stephen’s Day (aka Boxing Day). The custom was to go kill a wren or some other small bird, then take it from door to door, begging for money and/or treats so they could give the bird a grand funeral.

No Haloween in Cameroon outside the expat community. They throw a helluva party though.

True-ish

I just did a halloween party for my English school students and their siblings. For the first time we did trick or treating around six houses who I’d asked to take part. I had to explain what it was all about to four of the five householders, and I supplied all the treats, plus gave a present for their time. It was great fun but it’s not quite the same as in America.

I did notice this year that there were MANY more halloween products for sale in the month before - by that I mean that four or five shops within half an hour’s drive had a display maybe five feet wide and four feet high. Still, that’s four or five shops more than last year. It was mostly knick-knacks and decorations rather than candy and it was very heavy on the pumpkins.
