Halloween weirdness

Its that time of year when you go into a store and see someone walking around in a costume. Usually they are people on their way to a party or event that are dressed up.

Also some of my neighbors put out some elaborate decorations like figures and tombstones. Some do the elaborate light thing.

Seen anything like that?

Happens all the time out here in the 'burbs. I have to say that in the daytime the inflatable monsters really make a front yard look tacky (because with the blower turned off what you’ve got is just a bunch of colorful rags on the lawn).

Yes. So?

I know, it’s weird. Sometimes I get these packs of dressed-up kids ringing my goddamned doorbell too and making my fool dog bark her fucking head off. They try to yell something at me, or maybe sing, I dunno, but by the time they get it out I’m already closing the door so I’m not sure what it is.

I used to live in Salem, Massachusetts. Witch City, USA. You don’t know weirdness.

+1

My company does Halloween big. I suppose it makes sense, since we all come from different ethnic backgrounds and certainly don’t’ all celebrate any other holidays in common.

Everyone up to the CEO will be in costume on the 31st, and people will be decorating their departments over the next few weeks.

Have I ever noticed people wearing costumes and decorating their houses/yards for Halloween? Yes. Is this supposed to be a strange occurrence for some reason?

We love Halloween, decorate for it even though we only get about 20 trick or treaters.

That sounds odd. What country do you live in?

Someone in our neighborhood pulled a new one this year: they left a little bag of candy on our doorstep, with a tag saying “You’ve been booed!” and giving instructions on how to pass it on. The idea is to put the tag in your window, then make two copies of the instructions and two more treat bags, which you secretly leave on another neighbor’s doorstep. All the houses near us have tags in their windows. We opted to display the tag so we wouldn’t get any more treats, but sorry…we didn’t pass it on.

Our neighborhood always does Halloween in a big way, and it’s a nice neighborhood like that, but we participate minimally. With luck, on Halloween night we’ll be sitting in the dark, getting drunk in our curmudgeon costumes.

I love halloween. Ill dress up and decorate my house. No care for the way it or I look in it

At my wife’s work they call it “ghosting” and you put the ghost sticker on your office door. I hadn’t heard of this before either.

At our office we’re doing something called “Trunk or Treating” where parents bring their kids to work and they trick or treat in the parking lot. People decorate their open trunks and hand out candy. Also a new one to me.

Yeah, but that was a couple of weeks ago and they were dressed for Oktoberfest.

I have had this at home and at school. I don’t mind it, and I always pass it on.

My neighbors love Halloween. One has a fake cemetery in their front yard, another has a bunch of inflatables, and another has ghosts hanging from all e trees and will crank up the eerie music on Halloween night. The most I do is join them in changing my front light from a white bulb to an orange bulb, and put a pumpkin in the window.

The chihuahuas do not like inflatables, nor do they like ghosts hanging from trees, loud creepy music, ringing doorbells, or kids. This is not my favorite holiday. I hope there is a lull in the vans full of kids pulling up in front of the house so I can shut he lights off at 8 or so. Or maybe a nice thunderstorm.

Wouldn’t that just kind of add to the ‘ambiance’?

Ambiance I don’t care about as much as the likelihood that rain will keep the kids home, even if no one walks around here anymore.

It keeps them home even though they are driven house to house. And although I live in a small rural town, my area looks like any suburban town. Sidewalks, houses reasonably close together, and lights.

Encountered a young lady dressed as a skeleton at the bus stop outside a local mall Friday afternoon.

When you live in a place where weirdness is commonplace, Halloween is merely a minor speedbump in the calendar.

I saw a werewolf having a Pina Colada at Trader Vics …

I attend several zombie events; most around this time of year. When we got the first official Guinness Worlds Record (for Monroeville Mall) they were still a novelty. Now they are almost as much a part of the season as black cats and candy-corn.

When Santarchy becomes mainstream, me and my liver quit.
