Alternately, I might go a different route and invest in a Yaesu FT-817ND or Elecraft KX2. Both radios are rather less powerful than either the IC-718 or the IC-7200, but have the advantage of being much more portable, being smaller, lighter, and portable. Some versions of the FT-817 even come with a cute little carrying bag with a shoulder strap (which would probably look kind of silly with a quarter-wavelength 20 meter antenna and counterpoise sticking out of it…)

I’ve got the 817nd. It’s a great little radio but at a minimum, you’ll need to budget another $150 or so for the bhi DSP modification if you plan on using it for much SSB or AM. I’d had the radio for a couple years before getting the DSP and it is one of those things I really regret not doing sooner. Those long hours of harsh listening should have never happened. I’ve been casually looking for an SSB mechanical filter but haven’t found the right deal. I did spring for the Z817 autotuner which is a nice equipment companion for the rig.

I’ve heard great things about the IC-7300 but haven’t played with one at all. Same the the Elecraft gear.

I’ve just used up the penultimate serving of leftover ham in a nice omelet. The ultimate serving will probably be tomorrow, I expect in grilled ham and cheese.

I made ham-and-cheese omelettes for breakfast yesterday. Unbeknownst to me, Mrs. L.A. was feeling a little queasy, and didn’t eat much of hers. So, unbeknownst to her, I saved it and had it for breakfast this morning.
