I think it’s hilarious that a moderator will take the time to insist that an explanation as to why HH was not warned has been given, neither he nor anyone else was able to provide a quote when I politely asked. (I figured, “Hey, maybe I missed it.”)

There were no further reports made from that thread. I started a thread in the mod loop suggesting we ban harry as a troll the next day, on the 25th. We discussed the subject for about two days, and then I banned him on the 26th.

Wait, you banned him on the 26th? I thought you banned him on the 27th. This is seriously disturbing. I would have much less problem with your enforcement of longstanding trolling and jerk rules if you banned him on the 27th.

I’d be fine if the mods really banned him because he declared himself a Nazi. It was the trolling, wink wink. HandsomeHarry doesn’t get to claim a kinder, gentler Nazism. The word already has a meaning.

Why not discriminate? If someone wants to promote Nazism, or pedophilia, or the KKK, well, fuck them. Go somewhere else. What’s the upside of tolerating that shit? Some make-believe world of absolute free speech? It’s actual evil that does actual harm.

Because sometimes the best way to fight ignorance and evil is to expose it to the light. If hh had seriously wanted to discuss Nazi beliefs we could have openly discussed why they were evil. And while we generally fail to disabuse holders of hardcore fringe beliefs of those beliefs, what we do do is create an easily-findable debunking of those views for others who are less resolute in their faith to see. Board history suggests that we have a much greater effect on lurkers than we do on the individuals with which we contend, and thus do we advance the cause of knowledge in imperceptible ways.

But hh didn’t want to discuss his views; he just wanted to be a jerk. Which **is **a bannable offense. As I said before, ideally he would have received a warning but I agree that there was ample evidence the poster in question was seeking Suicide-by-Mod anyway and that the outcome would have been the same, so the PTB went with the approach that provided the most damage limitation. And here we are.

To be fair, at least he didn’t troll individual board members via PM by making ridiculous personal claims in order to provoke a response. I can’t remember who pulled that one but I bet they got banned pretty quickly.

I’ve watched for years as this message board has declined from what it once was. It’s pretty much a huge echo chamber now. Almost all of the interesting people have left over the years. The pit has become a pathetic joke, there will never again be an epic thread like Cervaise’s telemarketing rant.

This banning has just shown me that the glory days are gone, and the board I remember will never be coming back. I could rage against the dying of the light, but I reckon It’s just time for me to move on. This message board has given me thousands of hours of entertainment over the last fifteen years, and for that I am thankful. It’s been a wonderful mixture of fun, education, and snark.
