The actual well-ordered militia is the National Guard, and, if this actually does continue, I do expect them to be called up.
The fake, self-appointed “well-ordered militia” that the right talks about? Those are the neo-Nazis in the streets.
We saw them in action when we had our BLM protest here in my sleepy town. Turns out they were the ones the cops were afraid of, since they were the ones with the guns and violent rhetoric. They were the ones the business owners turned away, while giving water bottles to the protesters.
I’m not sure that’ll pan out, since Trump can just pull the old “Ike switcheroo” and federalize the national guard after state call up and then order them to do the exact opposite of whatever the governor wanted them to do.
It’s really interesting to see how different flavors of right wing crazy view this situation. On the Three Percenters (from Wikipedia):
The movement was co-founded by Michael “Mike” Brian Vanderboegh from Alabama, a member of the Oath Keepers, a group with whom the Three Percenters remain loosely allied and are often compared to. Vanderboegh claims to have formerly been a member of Students for a Democratic Society and the Socialist Workers Party, but abandoned left-wing politics and politics in general in 1977 after being introduced to libertarianism.
The group provided security for a 2017 event held by Patriot Prayer called “Rally for Trump and Freedom”. Several Three Percenters were also present and providing security for the Unite the Right rally held in Charlottesville, Virginia. After the events at Charlottesville, the group’s “National Council” issued a “stand down order”, stating, “we will not align ourselves with any type of racist group”.
Although:
In 2018, three men were arrested in connection with the bombing of a Minnesota mosque. The bombing was non-lethal. One of men involved, former sheriff’s deputy Michael B. Hari, had connections to the group.
So although no doubt racist views are widespread in the demographic of their membership, the group in itself does not appear to have any racist agenda. I guess that makes their position on violent suppression of BLM demonstrations by government agents much easier to understand. Maybe they don’t really give a shit about black lives, but their hatred for the Federal government is such that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
ETA: Although I share the OP’s cynicism about the self-serving hypocrisy of the average MAGA fuckwit (not to mention the NRA) with regard to Constitutional principles, I have to say the the Three Percenters in Oregon do appear to have a consistently principled insane hatred of the Federal Government.
If Trump’s excesses get more out of control, it does seem conceivable that we might see Bundy’s crowd lining up with BLM protesters against Federal government tyranny. How bizarre would that be?
OK, as the SD consensus seems that the self-appointed militias are not marshalling the resistance envisioned in the US Constitution because they are indeed sympathetic to the tyranny and oppression.
Therefore, apart from a concerted federal move on either the 2nd Amendment directly or indirectly on the type of weapon freely available, what other issue would get these American patriots out of their bunkers for the broad purpose they were envisioned?
As you suggest in your rhetorical question, they’ll (possibly) come out of their bunkers to defend their own interests as they see them. And only their own interests; this has nothing to do with citizenship writ large and concern for the governance of the country.
Louisville police released surveillance footage of the shooting that showed dozens of members of the NFAC milling around the park prior to the march when the gun accidentally discharged and a few people dropped to the ground injured.
