Hanger Steak in N. VA?

Not a lot of butcher shops around here; the closest one is in Springfield. He gets hanger steak in pretty regularly, but local restaurants snap it up. I tried calling a few others on the phone, but they don’t carry it.

Hanger steak is great. Among the cheaper cuts, it tastes a lot better than skirt or flank steak. Many restaurants pass it off as New York Strip. Cost-to-flavor ratio, it’s the most bang you can get for the buck. But it’s getting harder and harder to find.

Any meat lovers in the DC area know where I can snag some of this without driving more than 50 miles? My usual connections are all running dry.

Can’t you just put an order in at the butcher you currently use? When I’ve wanted special cuts of meat, pheasant and such I just pop into my local butcher’s a few days beforehand and put an order in. The only time I’ve had to order more than a couple of days ahead has been Christmas when my sister wanted a brace of pheasant, I ordered those in mid-October.

Not really. Since his business relationship with local restaurants outstrips his miniscule business relationship with me, and his policy with them is “First come, first served,” my best bet is to get him on the phone right after a shipment. I’d just like to improve my chances by finding another local butcher who carries the goods.
