Bad Company (1972) is on TV and there was just a scene where a guy is strung up in the classic Western way: Rope around his neck, he’s on a horse, horse is taken away. He struggles for a few seconds. I saw another film that took place aboard a British sailing vessel and a crewman was hauled up from the deck.
How long would someone hanged this way remain conscious and kicking?
Could be up to a half hour, though that’s on the long side. It will depend enormously on how exactly the noose is tied. Getting the noose and drop just right so that the neck breaks instantaneously is an art that few people outside of professional hangmen ever could get - or need to get - proficient in. The drop technique didn’t come into common use until the second half of the 19th century, even in official hangings in England. The British didn’t cut their victims down for an hour just to be safe.
If there’s no drop to break the neck it would draw for several minutes if the noose simply closes the trachea or just some seconds if it collapses the carotid going up the neck.
