It’s official!! I’ve been posting her on the Dope for a decade as of today. I was one of a handful of original disciples (Hi Opal! Hi Jodi! Hi Lynn!) who followed the SDMB from its original home at AOL to its new home out in the big, bad worldwide internet. (While I’m occasionally nostalgic for the cute little self-contained world of AOL, I do not miss dial-up connections. After all these years, just the sound of a dial tone still gives me a twitchy eye.)
Anywho, when I saw “Straight Dope” message group advertised on AOL, I was thrilled because I’d been a long time fan of Unca Cecil’s irreverent books. And I quickly learned that the SD forum attracted a wide variety of quirky, funny, intelligent people. I’d found a new home.
I can’t tell you what the first thread was on the AOL site, but I do remember the angst we all had when it was announced a few months (years?) later that AOL and SDMB were parting ways. What?! How would we find the new site? (This was the days before popular search engines.) We’d lose half our membership!!And what’s this about having to register separately? Unheard of!

I distinctly remember that the first thread I read here was regarding those little smelly white things that you occasionally cough up. Someone came forth and gave them a name: tonsillolith. One day I’m going to win a large amount of cash for knowing that bit of trivia.
Anywho, congratulations to all my fellow oldtimers on our Decade long + efforts to fight ignorance and annoy the masses. And thanks to all Dopers, past and present, banned and active, for 10 years of cheap entertainment.
On a side note, I blame all of you for the fact that my ass has spread a good 5 inches since I joined on 3-11-99.
Now where’s my damn cake?

PPS BTW, if you haven’t read any of the StraightDope books, I highly recommend them. They are really amusing and make great gifts! The first one especially was an instant classic and has kept its place of honor beside our lake cottage toilet for over 20 years.
