Happy Birthday, Bugs!

I just introduced my 2 and 4 year old boys to Bugs Bunny about 3 weeks ago, my 4 year old is still telling people “My Dad has Bugs Bunny on his phone!”

It seems so strange to me that Saturday morning cartoons have disappeared (note: we don’t have cable or satellite TV, just over the air), it was such a foundational part of my childhood.

Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny?

Am I the only one who, as a little kid, found the cartoon Elmer’s Candid Camera as being rather disconcerting? Specifically the part where Elmer finally goes psycho, the expression on his face and even more the ‘noises’ he’s making are really unsettling. The fact that the proto-Bugs didn’t have his normal voice yet didn’t help either*!*

I just heard a bit about Bugs on NPR. Mel Blanc based his voice on Clark Gable (especially It Happened One Night - watch this scene).

I always thought it was just the carrot chomping thing that was taken from Gable. I don’t hear any of his voice in Bugs’.

According to what I listened to, it was also the fast-talking. Also, the *attitude *is just there.

Mel once said in an interview that he couldn’t decide which accent sounded tougher, Brooklyn or the Bronx, so he combined the two for Bugs.
