It’s not like it takes that much bravery to make fun of Christians or Jesus. Oh noes, better be careful not to say anything offensive about Mother Mary, or you might get a strongly worded protest letter from the Catholic League or something!
The point of this is to protest the violent extremists who have senselessly killed people because of the absurd idea that Islam and Mohammad are above “blasphemy”.
I think a lot of white Americans have the mistaken idea that “Muslim = Arab”, and don’t understand that it is okay to criticize extremist Muslims without being against all Muslims or Arabic people (not that Arabs are necessarily Muslim). In their efforts to avoid looking “racist”, they reinforce the idea that extremists can prevent criticism of Mohammad by threatening violence.
(Except, of course, for those Americans who ARE racist against Arabs and don’t understand that a) Arabs are not necessarily Muslim b) there are Muslim extremists of all races)
You are, of course, correct in the serious nature of the day. OTOH, the OP said “Happy Blasphemy Day!” and “Enjoy!” setting the original tone a lot lighter than this.

Calling it Blasphemy Day does make the point succintly for those who understand where it's coming from, but OTOH to those extremists it only ratifies that yes it IS "blasphemy" and we know it is and engage in it deliberately to piss them off. So we're more or less where we started.
I’d say that “blasphemy” should be something you cannot really define and enforce fairly as a human, a sin that God exclusively has to take care of himself. Drawing a portrait of Muhammad in a bomb turban, or commenting on how consecrated hosts are really good with caviar, or a story about how J.R. “Bob” Dobbs gave it real good up the rear to Parvati while Shiva wasn’t looking, should be something that elicits no feeling other than, “what a jerk… that’s his problem, eh, I won’t piss on him if I see him on fire”.
But until that is achieved, well, let’s revel in at least showing that yes, in our culture we laugh at our own gods and saints and fear no consequences…*while on this Earth *:eek:. The radical wackos will still see it as only further proof of what degenerates we are.
