Happy Macintosh Owners

Yet another reason to own a Macintosh: What is this “love bug” virus you silly clones keep referring to? Is that anything like that silly “Y2K” everyone seemed so worried about? I hardly noticed…

(OK, so I have to wait about a year for good programs to get compiled for Mac OS, but dammit, I’m getting a G4 soon, and I’m damn proud! :D)

How long until you buy your new Mac? I ask because I am very heavily into Macs and go to all the expo’s and stuff like that. If you can wait until mid July, IIRC, that is the NY Macworld expo. And at EVERY Macworld Expo Steve announces a new product. This year it will be OS X but he has been hinting at maybe a new architecure design. Anyway, you might want to hold off until then. I know that there is a multi-processor unit in development, and the G4’s are due for a speed upgrade. Multi-processor might not be the way you want to go, but faster speed at a cheaper price is always nice. Anyway, thought I would warn you.

That’s one of the advantages of having a Macintosh, you don’t have to worry about the computer viruses! (Though there were a few in the old days.) Of course, you still need to watch out for those word macros and whatnot.

Good luck on your G4! I was thinking of getting one this year, but the wedding is cutting into my computer budget.

…that is, assuming you haven’t installed Virtual PC by SoftKeys, running Visual Basic…

wait, what am I talking about? Why would I want to do that? Never mind.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Ooo! You’re getting a G4? Can I touch you?

Thanks for the warning, and it won’t be until late summer at the earliest, so I guess I’m in like Flynn.

Now why on earth would I even run Word on a Macintosh? Why does everything have to be IBM- or Microsoft-oriented? Puh-lease. I have to use a clone at work, and I have to use Word at work, but at home, I’ll stick to Mac and all its wonderful software, thankyouverymuch.

I have one of the little iBooks, and I looovvvve it. What a pleasant little machine. My last computer (we also have a regular imac) was a powerbook 170 from about 1991 (got it for 300 bucks in 1996-- it was like using an antique remington or something) and I loved it, too, until it was mortally wounded. I used it up until late 1998, and now I think we are going to try to fix the screen and make it into a linux machine as it can’t really run the newer large programs (does anyone know much about linux?)

I am trying to get up to gumption to emancipate myself from Word (but I’m so used to it) and start using appleworks or something. Any recommendations on a word processing system? Word has become so bloated and surly.

For simple jobs, I love TexEdit (shareware)…

I like and have used ClarisWorks (AppleWorks) for ages…I’ve heard good things about Nissus Writer (I believe they have a FREE version at their web site)

Esprix, no offense meant! My Macintosh at home is a “Microsoft-free zone”, it runs no Microsoftware of any kind.

beagledave, I also use TexEdit, pretty cool for reformatting those e-mails that come to you with lines chopped up because they’ve been forwarded 10 times. I also use ClarisWorks and Nisus. Nisus is a great little word processor, I especially like the “grep” search and replace function.

Appleworks (which used to be Clarisworks, methinks, which is what I’m still using since I’m using an older PowerMac 7100) seems to fit the bill nicely, and I’m fairly sure comes with each new Mac. Didn’t you get it with your iBook? I would have thought so.

Arnold, you weren’t offending, but it was an amusing thought - MS on a Macintosh. {snicker} Now that’s funny!

Ok, this is one of those quirky little things that come up in life. There are only a few versions of linux that work on a Mac, one is called MKLinux (stands for Micro Kernel Linux). Anyway, I subscribe to a MKlinux mailing list. I’ll toss out a question to my gurus and see what they think, but do not get your hopes up. Older Macs are not too Linux friendly, plus Apple dropped the MKlinux tech team, so now it’s all individuals who are supporting it and most people now have newer machines, so they are busy writing code for the new ones and don’t really care about the old ones. I’ll get back to you. Feel free to email me and we can talk about it. I run and build Linux server’s so I might be able to help you.

Sorry for the hijack

<giggle> Macintosh… <giggle>

No thanks, I’ll stick with actually being able to run popular programs.

I’ll also stick with double posting, though we can’t blame that one on Windows.

I’m a very happy Mac owner. I have a PowerMac that I rarely use anymore and a tangerine iBook. I’ll be upgrading sometime this summer too, so I’ll wait until July to see what comes next.

Breck - quiet, you. This thread is for happy Macintosh owners, not you cloned sheep types. Heretic! Out with you.

sigh…I wanna upgrade my Mac so bad…I’m currently using a PowerBook 3400, which I really like, but after years of very heavy use, it’s showing its age. Powerbook G3…mmmmm…
