A lot of people foolishly relaxed after the 1970s because they assumed the major battles over civil rights, the military industrial complex, freedom of expression, environmental awareness, etc etc were won and settled. There was further progress to be made (obviously), but the beachhead, many thought, was firmly established, and it would be forward from there. Economic prosperity in the 1980s made it easy to allow ourselves to be further distracted by comforts and technological innovation. And it’s no coincidence that the forces of darkness quietly sowed the seeds for their resurgence in that very decade, preparing to roll back all the hard-won victories, while progressives’ attention was both elsewhere and enervated. The foundation for our current madness was laid back then.

Relief doesn’t equal relaxation. It just means you realize that enough Americans agree with you that maybe the whole country isn’t irretrievably fucked.
I’m really getting annoyed with the whole “Don’t get complacent!!!” crowd this election. No one is getting “complacent”, or “relaxing”. We all understand what having tens of millions of people voting for Trump means, even if he loses.
But goddamn it, if we’re not even allowed to feel a moment of relief at a huge victory, we’re fucked anyways. People can’t be on 100% of the time. the stress of that will kill them.
So have a party that day, and wake up the next, hungover but still determined.
Yeah, relief for sure. But as noted, it ain’t over. The fascists have made themselves known, so they’re outed, but keeping them out of office will be a battle our children will still be fighting. I will also be trying to outlive Trump so that I can celebrate his demise.
