If you reread my posts (best done by skipping over) the lies I’ve addressed a couple of posts ago, you should get an accurate picture of my position. Do we have the right to criticize Bush? Yes. My poin is that I find it inappropriate—and that is the actual word I used—for someone, particularly a celebrity to criticize Bush, or America, in another country. I have no desire to erase the right we have to do it, but I will speak out against the sense of it. I do understand the advantages, and they are real. But, I think the net effect is negative.
Yes, my apologies to my fellow Dopers, but I had many lies to deal with. I do prefer to post more of the person I’m responding to as to give what they’ve said a fair showing. I probably could have used fewer examples to prove that the shithead was lying, but he seemed to have trouble comprehending. Still, my apologies.

I do see your point. Non-Americans (especially those who wish to do do Americans harm) probably do think " Hey, this person’s also speaking out against America! Good for him! This inspires me to continue to do my very best against the evils of America!" I don’t deny that criticism of Bush will make those that hate American ideals and actions only more vociferous in their hatred. And I agree with you in that Bush is heavily associated with America - as I said before, he’s your representative, and to people across the world it translates as “All Americans want this guy to be their leader”.
On the other hand, though, to others a person speaking out sends the message that “Not all Americans agree with Bush”. This should ( I believe) make people realise Bush does not have the backing of all Americans, and therefore all Americans should not be punished for the actions of Bush. Plus, people in tightly controlled regimes may think “Hey, wait…I can’t say this stuff about my leaders…wouldn’t it be great if I could? Maybe the American ideals aren’t all that bad.”.
I think that the slamming of Bush by Americans in other countries (be they celebrities or not) will have both negative and positive effects. I personally believe that the positives, combined with their right to express such opinions, will outweigh the negative. But this is all just speculation - you could be quite right.

The thing is I, that this in no way improves my opinion of Chavez. There is no love one hate the other requirement. Belefonte’s endorsement of him will not go down as his finest moment.
That said, he probably is right in saying millions of Americans support Chavez. 1% of the population would be millions. Wow. It would be hard to find anything that’s not supported by millions of Americans.
