Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 discussion thread(spoilers)

Nope, that was another thing that annoyed me in the movie. McGonnagal telling Filtch to take the Slytherins to the dungeons. In the book they were given the choice of staying to fight, but they all (apart from Draco & friends) decided to leave via the tunnel.

Who, sadly, left her when Luna came down with Sexually Transmitted Nurblefluffs and later took up with Neville. The movie producers kept the lay line but cut oun Rolf.

It’s worth remembering that the dungeon is the location of the Slytherin house dormitories. Technically, all she did is send them to their rooms.

Actually, this was kinda explained. Since he meant to let Voldie kill him, he basically didn’t have power of Harry anymore. Harry mentions that none of Voldie’s curses appear to be sticking, and it’s cause of that protection. So really, the last fight is kinda pointless, cause he wouldn’t be able to kill Harry anyway.

“And let it be remembered that house Slytherin played its part!”

That wasn’t how it came across. May have been what was intended, in which case it wasn’t well done at all. The dungeons are also where Filtch reminicses about the screaming of students being punished in the first book.

Which takes me back to my question about why the wand worked even a bit against Harry.

Remember, there is zero battle between Harry and Voldy in the final book. The wand just leaps from Voldy’s hand and the spell zonks him dead.

^
wand or no wand, voldemort’s combative powers are unmatched by any living wizard. even than, if i were him, i would have gone after harry with a .357

Yeah, I was actually thinking that during the scene in the movie. The whole point of it only being a one shot confrontation is that Voldie’s curses can’t affect Harry anymore. That’s why it didn’t hurt when he had the Cruciatus curse performed right after the King’s Cross scene. Wouldn’t have worked as well in the movie, I guess. I think we’re more led to believe that Harry has become the same power level wizard.

Just got back from the theater.

Movie was awesome. Gringotts was great–the embedded chain in the dragon’s neck was a nice touch. Voldy’s walk through the dead goblins was incredibly gruesome, as was Snape’s end. Helena Bonham-Carter acting as Hermione pretending to be Bellatrix was fantastic (godDAMN that woman can act). The Battle of Hogwarts was as great as I expected it would be, especially the very beginning, where McGonagall fights Snape, then summons the suits of armor (though I wish they’d let her say “we teachers are rather good at magic”).

Neville was pretty badass–not nearly as badass as he was in the books, but he done good. Also, Matthew Lewis is all kinds of hot. As for the sword-being-a-rapier thing…it’s magic, people! Magic! (And isn’t goblin steel supposed to be extra-awesome?)

Blargh, I don’t even remember all the stuff I was going to talk about, but, seriously, GREAT film. I have to go see it again, for several reasons. First, we had shitty seats (which is my own stupid fault, but still). Second, I had to pee like a motherfuck throughout the entire second half of the movie, but there was no way in hell I was going to get up and leave in the middle of it. Third, because OMG HARRY POTTER.

The camera seemed to linger quite a bit on the faces of the goblin tellers in Gringott’s. Were they cameos? I didn’t see any reference to them in the credits, or on IMDB.

Saw it this weekend. Awesome film. Loved the character actors - that woman from Trainspotting was great as the Grey Lady, and that Venetian vampire woman from Dr Who as Narcissa Malfoy.

must be representative. they were all in pinstripes, effecting the dapper, conservative looks of old-fashioned bankers. a bowler hat won’t suit them though.

I didn’t read the books, so perhaps this is answered:

Why doesn’t Voldy have a regular nose? Is he the Michael Jackson of the wizarding world?

When he had his new body conjured he wanted to look as snake-like as possible, hence minimal nose.

I thought that all of the Slytherin’s were sent out after Pansy’s(?) outburst, and a general rumble of agreement from the rest of the House (can’t find my copy of the book)? Not a choice as I recall it. I remember people complaining at the time of the book that some of the Slytherin’s should have been allowed to stay.

They were doing a general evacuation of the younger students, and any of-age students who didn’t want to stay. Pansy had her outburst, and then:

So the older Slytherins were given a choice to stay and fight, but none of them took it. I do think she should have had at least a few stay to represent the Snapes and the Slughorns among the students.

What I don’t understand is the scene where the sword disappears, after Harry and Co. escaped. It just fades into nothingness as the bad guys stroll through the bank.

Can you also quote the bit with Pansy’s outburst? (It’s been four years since I read the book.) I’m curious what she said.

Love that part.
