Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 discussion thread(spoilers)

[QUOTE=PeskiPiksi]

I understand what you’re saying, and I don’t necessarily disagree, but I did notice in the scene when Harry is leaving for the forest, he and Ron make meaningful eye contact over Hermione’s shoulder. We only saw it from Harry’s side, but I’m pretty sure they had a subtle, but definite, moment of “I love you, I understand, goodbye,” there between them.

Also, they knew he was going to die so I can understand their lack of reaction to seeing his body. They knew it was coming. Devastated yes, but not shocked or surprised.

My bullet points:

[ul]
[li]I wish they could have shown the actual death of Fred. I think it would have made more of an impact.[/li]
[li]Draco was awesome.[/li]
[li]Hagrid was barely there, which is not a bad thing in my book. And Grawp was completely absent, which is a wonderful thing in my book![/li]
[li]Liked the scene when Harry hid among the students and then confronted Snape in front of the whole school. Rickman was really chewing the scenery in that one![/li]
[li]Snape’s death was truly horrific.[/li]
[li]Again, Kloves shows his Hermione fanboy side: It was Harry’s idea to ride the dragon out, not hers! (Just as Ron stood on a broken leg between Sirius and Harry and told him he’d have to kill them all in PoA, not Hermione!) I love Hermione, too, but Harry’s the hero and Ron’s more than just comic relief.[/li]
[li]The Chamber of Secrets scene was cute. In kind of a scary way.[/li]
[li]Harry and Ginny’s kiss fell flat, to me. Which disappointed me because I’m a Harry/Ginny shipper.[/li]
[li]For a minute there, I thought they were going to take away Neville’s killing of Nagini, and I was about to be super pissed. But then he woke up and it was all okay again. :)[/li][/ul]

re: ron and harry’s parting. i can see that, i guess. i think i just wanted to see a little more out of ron overall. i was bothered by a similar thing in part 1- the scene where hermione is being tortured by bellatrix. in the book ron is going out of his mind trying to escape, shouting her name, trying to apparate to go to her aid, just losing it because the girl he loves is being tormented. in the movie he just kind of stands there until dobby shows up. ron’s one of my favorite characters and i just expect a lot out of his pivotal scenes, i suppose. it’s like you said- he’s more than just comic relief.

i agree with a lot of your points, snape’s death was brutal. very well done, though. i also would’ve liked to see the actual death scene with fred, but i cried like a baby anyway. and yay no grawp, and just enough hagrid.

i was also worried about neville and the snake, even though i’d read he’s the one to do it!

some other points:

a lot of the appearances by hogwarts staff and such did feel like cameos, but i don’t really see any other way it could have been. i would rather have seen everyone just for a moment than not at all.

i actually liked mcgonagall’s line about “his name is voldemort”.the point isn’t to argue that his true name is tom riddle, she’s basically saying “fuck this not saying his name shit, he’s coming and he’s going to try to kill us” and i liked that. go mcgonagall.

i was quite disappointed not to see the kingsley/slughorn/mcgonagall duel with voldemort, and also the hermione/ginny/luna duel with bellatrix, but can’t have it all, i suppose.

Oh, I do have a question.

How did Voldemort die, then? Correct me if I’m wrong, but in the book, the Avada spell turns on him(the wand leaves him and shoots him with his own spell). In the movie…the wand becomes weak and Harry’s spell kind of overtakes him and…he disintegrates?

In the book, his body is there, just a dead body like any other.

How did he die?

voldemort did die from the avada. the elder wand belongs to harry, and the curse is forced back on to tommy. the movie shows that the curse goes back on him by going up the wand and entering his hand, arm, body.

harry’s expelliarmus is the dominate spell and the wand goes to harry.

in the book it rebounds like it did when tommy killed harry’s parents, a big explosion back, and the wand goes to harry through the expelliarmus.

i’m not fond of the movie exploding him… just having his body, the thing he feared most, laying abandoned in the courtyard would have been much better.

as to bellatrix exploding… i guess ginny’s powerful “reducto” had to come from somewhere.

I caught that, ever so briefly. I guess it does speak to some attention to detail that they had him in there, even if he was never mentioned or referred to.

Did he Avada him in the final fight? I did not see the curse go up his arm.

Sue me.

I just looked at a bootleg and saw the final seconds of Voldy’s life again. I do not see the curse go up his hand, his arm, and his body.

It looks like the wand fails him and Harry’s spell kills him.

it seems they did a voiceless avada/expelli. must have been a bit tired out after flying/fighting/morphing around the castle.

the green curse light goes from where the spells originally collide back toward tommy, then up the wand, then in his hand, which turns a bit darkish, then up his arm, etc.

saw it in imax, and due to spoilers and the russian you tube of the last 15 ish minutes, i paid very close attention to the green light. it isn’t very obvious, tommy does give his hand a bit of a horrified look when the curse starts to move into it. then of course he starts to peel, fall apart, drift into the wind.

Had a very nice time. But:

Tom Riddle hit the floor with a mundane finality…

THAT’S the way Voldy should have died, not with a SFX extravaganza.

Bellatrix’s death bugged me for the same reason.

Could you please tell me more details so I can find this online? I’d love to see it!

I think it was on TV Guide channel. Tom Felton was the main interviewee.

Just got back from it.

I was disappointed at how little of the battle was included. Important characters died, and we didn’t get to see them die.

I really hope to see an extended version at some point.

Just got back as well. Saw the 3-D version in a regular theater, it was actually the first of the “new” style 3-d movies I’ve seen.

I thought the 3-d was fairly impressive. After a while, I did just kind of get used to it, but there weren’t a whole lot of jump out at you moments or anything like that. They mainly seemed to use it for depth, which I thought worked really well. Especially since it was done after the fact. The John Carter from Mars trailer in 3-D looked amazing.

As for the movie itself, there was a lot left out of the end that I wanted in there, but I still enjoyed it. My favorite parts of all the books starts when the get to Hogsmeade in the final section, I think the Battle of Hogwarts was the best thing she’s ever written. So I was a letdown in parts. But I still thought it was a lot of fun.

One thing I can say about the 3-D: I didn’t see the murkiness or the darkness that people are complaining about. Maybe we just have a good theater (which we do), but I thought all the colors looked bright and vibrant.

Three’s still the best. This was pretty good though, by Harry Potter standards.

What an end!
Yes, it deviates from canon and I am not a purist. Kloves streamlined a fat, fat book that was Harry Potter Goes Camping and then some really good stuff happens at the end.

I loved it. Yeah, I am sure with multiple viewings I will go Hrrrrmmmmmm over various scenes and then re-read the book and overthink it in nerdgirl fashion, but right now, I think the execution overall for this series ending flick was brilliant.

I want to wrap my arms around it and hug it forever.

I know it isn’t on topic totally, but Aint-it-cool-news has been posting Behind the Scenes photos for a year now, and today’s is a very cool Harry Potter one from before they filmed the first movie. It shows Radcliffe and Grint together.

By the way, Aintitcool’s Behind the Scenes artciles have been really cool the past year and are worth a look.

Radcliffe and Grint

We did it, we bashed them, wee Potter’s the one,
And Voldy’s gone moldy, so now let’s have some fun!

What a neat picture,** Mahaloth**!

Saw it last night and really liked it. I think I still like 3 the best, but this is a very close 2nd. I was also disappointed that some of my favorite characters were barely seen, but a movie that included everything and everyone I’d like to see would be impossibly long. I need to see it again; I’m sure there’s a lot I missed.

Loved: Mrs. Weasley vs. Bellatrix; McGonnagall’s glee at being able to use the spell; Snape/Lily backstory; Snape’s last moments with Harry. I also thought they did a nice job with the Epilogue. Fit in much better than the book’s did, I thought.

I like it too but I waiver on this. The first one set the tone and was fabulous in it’s transparent use of special effects. Things like the brick wall in Diagon Alley stand out and flow naturally in the movie. Even the chocolate frog hitting the wind was nicely done. It is the small touches that make a movie memorable.

I loved John Hurt’s performance as Ollivander and the overall casting of each character. And of course, you can never duplicate the innocence of children as actors. I just love the line, "I’m Hermione Granger, and you are…

That was true in the book, too, though. During the interlude after the first battle, when Harry goes through the Great Hall he is devastated to see the ones who have died.

I’m with you on an extended version – I hope they filmed lots of scenes that can be seen eventually.

I think only the most fundamentalist purist would be upset at them for streamlining the camping scenes in 7.1.

Anyone else really curious as to what they’re looking at?
