Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Seen It!

In the book the only file Harry saw in Umbridge’s office was Arthur Weasley’s. While he was still transformed into Runcorn he warned Arthur that he was being watched.

What you’re misunderstanding is: That pile contained half-bloods and 'Teh Ghey

She’s also putting forth an effort to round up other ‘deviants’*

(* Being here as long as I have, do you honestly think I’m being serious? )

Maybe in the Potterverse, ‘teh ghey’ is slang for ‘does it with unicorns’*.

*reference to Elton John, who when asked what ‘bisexual’ meant, replied “It means I also do it with parrots.”

Finally saw it.

Dobby’s death was almost as heartbreaking as the book; shame they short-cut the redemption of Kreacher; Tom Felton is still the best of the child actors by miles, despite having less screentime than HBP; the beginning was terrifying and excellently done; I wish they’d cut out more of the camping trip from hell.

I finally saw it too. Overall I enjoyed it but I must say I was glad when it was over as I felt it dragged a little at times. That could have been partially because I was tired, though.

It was a long movie at 2 hours 15 mins.

I think that’s why most of us are relieved they cut most of Grimmauld place and a fair bit of the camping, it could have been so much worse!

A friend of mine posted this on their facebook page:
The passage of time

That’s kinda cool.

I hate to be an idiot here, but can someone refresh my memory as to why Voldemoort is so hung up on killing Harry Potter?

Because Trelawney’s prophecy vaguely suggests that Harry will kill him.

Anybody know which movie the second of Arnold’s photos comes from?

Probably Half Blood Prince, it’s the last time they’re on the Hogwarts Express

The prophecy was vague as to the exact identity of the child, but it was pretty clear that this child was potential Big Trouble for Voldemort: “The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches…<snip>…either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives…”

After his first attempt on Harry’s life failed spectacularly, Voldemort probably also wanted to kill him out of sheer spite. I mean, here he is, one of the most powerful and evil wizards of all time, and he gets whupped trying to kill a BABY and has to spend the next decade or so as basically a ghost. Harry also goes on to interfere with Voldemort’s plans on multiple occasions, and Voldemort killed plenty of people for that sort of thing. But the prophecy definitely made Harry’s death a higher priority for Voldemort than that of most others who had worked against him. Note also that the prophecy suggests that the only way for Voldemort to avoid being killed by Harry is to kill Harry himself.

riddle only heard part of the prophecy. just the first bit, that a child with the power to vanquish him was to be born at the end of july to parents who defied him thrice.

he didn’t hear and still didn’t know that “he would mark him” and “either must die”.

riddle figured on getting rid of the threat early, when that didn’t work it got personal.

I was thinking that Voldemort did learn the rest of the prophecy in Order of the Phoenix, but checking online (I don’t have the book here) I see you’re right, he apparently never learned the full details. Of course, the belief that Harry had “the power to vanquish” him was reason enough for Voldemort to want him dead.

Incidentally, I think that as Evil Overlords go Voldemort showed unusual self-restraint when it came to trying to kill Harry. Although he knew he’d have to get rid of Harry sooner or later, he was willing to put this on the back burner to deal with other issues.

Yes, I do! Ron and Harry are returning to Hogwarts after Christmas vacation in Half-Blood Prince (halfway through the movie).

Thanks for refreshing my memory as to Voldemort’s motives.

I liked that during (IIRC) Half Blood Prince, Dumbledore reveals that the other candidate who could have fulfilled the prophecy was Neville. Voldemort’s attack on Harry was what ensured Harry would be his rival.

During the last bit of the series;

Neville gains the sword of Griffindor and kills Nagini, proving that he could have been a contender!

Nothing earth shattering, just a nice nod to quiet nerdy lads everywhere.

Not really, he was trying to kill Harry from book one and stated in book two that it was his primary goal.

um, untrue? unless potions can be traced (which i don’t believe so). plus harry’s engaged in the unauthorized use of polyjuicing before, right?

i just spend 90 mins wading through this thread and this is the only thing i’ve decided to respond to/contribute.

CRIPES ALMIGHTY, PEOPLE. TAKE THE ETHICAL/NOT ETHICAL DISCUSSION TO GD ALREADY.

The Ministry is waiting for any excuse to arrest Harry “for his own protection”, also the reason the Dursleys had to drive away before being apparated to safety.

Look, the story is full of plot holes, it could be read several ways but when Harry protests, Madeye Moody replies that Harry doesn’t have a choice as everyone else is overage. Like someone else pointed out, if that wasn’t the reason it would have been simpler to transform Harry into someone else.

The Ethics discussion was moderated and over last week. No need to shout.
