Forgive me for being an anal-retentive geek, but I’ve been reviewing the books in preparation for the 7th one and I have a question. Hermione has 11 OWLs, but as far as I can tell she is taking only 10 courses, the 7 “required” ones (potions, charms, transfiguration, herbology, DADA, history of magic, and astromony) as well as three “electives” (care of magical creatures, arithmancy, and ancient runes). She walked out on divination. Some internet sites list muggle studies as her last OWL, but IIRC, she quit that at the end of her third year. In addition, in OOP, when they take the tests, they mention all the others but never mention her taking that one. Am I missing something? Is there another class she takes, or did she take the muggle studies test without taking more of the course? Anybody know?
Well, she’d certainly have enough background information to test out of Muggle Studies. If it was allowed, she’d certainly add on another OWL.
Didn’t she use the whole timeturner thing in book three to take extra classes and get more OWLs?
It was a typo- Hermione took 10 classes, so she would only take 10 OWLs.
Thank you. I’m not crazy then, just overly critical.
Interesting that mobo85’s link claims this to be the first error in the Harry Potter series; as I recall, several had been pointed out in the past, most notably the fact that in Goblet of Fire, James Potter’s “ghost” comes out of Voldemort’s wand before Lily’s instead of vice versa (since Lily was killed later, and the wand was releasing spells in the reverse order of their casting).
That was corrected in later printings, but yes, it was definitely a mistake. This site lists quite a few mistakes (although some are debatable).
