No. There were no wars fought over SS or Medicare. There were a tad fewer casualities as well. I don’t have the exact numbers, but I’m pretty sure it was less than the 500,000 casualities in the Medicare debate.
On the other hand, SS and Medicare did draw the same sort of opposition that health care reform is drawing. That’s why they would be a relevant comparison, whereas a comparison to the slavery debate is so retarded that I that the only explanation for Harry making the comparison is that he is either trolling for reactions and headlines, or he’s senile.
Did anyone see the RNC’s completely ridiculous rebuttal? They put out a web ad reading: “Do you agree with Harry Reid? Oppose Govt Health Care = Support Slavery. Yes or No.”
Actually it would be those who have taught me that slavery was the worst thing that the American people ever was a part of. Something that we need to continuously apologize for.
Reid is so over the top. He needs to go away this November.
Comparing UHC to a civil right? Civil rights don’t need to be paid for by other people. In other words, your civil rights end where mine begin.
UHC (and soon, shelter, food, flatscreens) are an entitlement, not a civil right. An entitlement based in poor public policy, but an entitlement just the same.
Why do people keep saying this? He wasn’t comparing UHC to slavery or civil rights. He was stating that conservatives, by their very nature (conservatives don’t like change) have been on the wrong side of several issues. Including the ones mentioned.
Harry “Milquetoast” Reid … over the top? Gimme a break.
Basic healthcare is *almost *universally regarded as a fundamental right in the developed world. The fact that you can’t wrap your head around the difference between a TV and medical care does not signify.
Rights, as the word has been used in this country, don’t equate to significant money transfer from my pocket to yours. But framing UHC as a right, instead of an entitlement, starts the slippery slope.
Your boy Harry likened those who resist the government healthcare takeover to those who resisted getting rid of slavery. How can you defend this? This is the guy who bribed Landrieu (D - On The Take) with $100m of OUR TAX MONEY just so she would change her vote.
Disgusting. Your guy. Not enough bad things can happen to him.
Please. Now who is being naive. You dont think that this odious practice of funnelling pork to states isn’t done to bolster the position of the pol from that state?
Well, to be fair and balanced, someone should mention that congress’ approval rating is only that low because the Republicans are dragging it way, way down:
Now 40% approval isn’t all that great for the Dems, but at 14%, the pubbie congresscritters should all consider killing themselves, or resigning like Nixon did when his numbers wandered down towards the single digits.
I just thought I’d thank all of you for the government healthcare I enjoy! I had private insurance right up until I needed it most. Then private insurance kicked me to the curb.
I sincerely hope none of you ever gets seriously ill. If you do you’ll quickly see how BADLY private insurance is administered.
It seems nobody else matters. If you have insurance screw everybody else. They just figure the insurance company wont screw them over. When it does they suddenly get a horrible lesson. But then it is too late. It happens over and over .
The polling at realclearpolitics.com is regarding how people would vote, in that case people then think about their own representative, not what they think about the chamber or the senate as a whole.
(I have seen this before, many think their rep is great, other reps are not)
