Just thinking about things, I’m not certain there is. Maybe Return of the Jedi?
Seriously, think on it. Marvel’s set up this movie for essentially ten years. And they left it on a massive cliffhanger. I can’t think of any movie with expectations built this high. Even with other trilogy - sort of - enders like Deathly Hallows or Mockingjay I’m having difficulty seeing the same level of interest.
Well, in both Harry Potter, and the Mockingjay series, the end was known in advance. That’s not the case with Endgame.
The Phantom Menace, maybe - if it had been produced in this era of social media. As it was, it did pretty well with the relatively limited amount of exposure it could generate. Possibly the Matrix sequels as well.
I agree the phantom menace is the best comparison. But at the same time, it’s still somewhat hard to compare. Yodalicious mentioned above that people were buying tickets to other movies to see the trailer, but trailers are released online now so there’s no real reason to do that in 2019. Yes, I’m sure the trailer could be found online in 1999, but it definitely wasn’t as easy and accessible as the end game trailer is in 2019. On the other hand, with social media it’s easier to see the hype as opposed to 1999.
Phantom Menace is also much closer to End Game than other examples (Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings) because it’s not obvious what will happen. All the others were based on books and were obviously going to be fairly faithful. Even though the events of Infinity War also occurred in the comics, comic book adaptions are much looser, so it’s more speculation about what will happen as opposed to just being excited to see words translated to the big screen.
If this rambling has a point, I guess it’s that this is the most anticipated film since the phantom menace. Whether it’s more anticipated, I don’t know. So I guess I haven’t actually answered your question.
Yeah, based on experience I’d have to say the only contender is TPM. Returning to the world of Star Wars after 16 years is a pretty big pull.
Whether it was more anticipated would be a hard fact to determine, though. The Marvel thing has kept things pretty hyped for years now with multiple movies contributing to it each year for 10 years.
I can’t imagine that the overall anticipation m—anticipation being an emotional dedication to the expectation — for Avengers is anywhere close to anticipation for various Star Wars sequels or Harry Potter sequels or Lord of the Rings sequels, or Teilight or Hunger Games.
The Marvel movies have a following but I don’t see a lot of emotional commitment to it. It’s a very skillfully and efficiently produced series. I don’t think it inspires love and passion the way the other ones I mentioned did.
I was only 12 years old at the time, and in addition, there wasn’t the internet to gauge wide-scale anticipation, but perhaps Return of the Jedi was more highly anticipated than Phantom Menace?
I think there’s anticipation for it but not much more than a handful of other Marvel movies. The first Avengers film had a lot of build up for it as I remember.
And don’t most people sorta know how End Game is going to go? I don’t read the comics but through a lot of chit-chat don’t most people figure
they’re going to figure out how to beat Thanos by going back in time and revive a lot of characters, which was broadcast by Dr.Strange saying it’s the only possible way to get a winning outcome
I’d never heard of it either. I knew about the earlier Avengers movies, but didn’t know that there was another one coming, much less that it was some sort of “ending” to the franchise.
I’m not someone who avoids movies or pop-culture references. And there are also superhero and comic-book movies that I really like, although I never bothered to see any of the Avengers films, and this one never made it onto my radar until today.
I don’t know if you can go off of the comics at all. The story that inspired it happened long after my comic book Period. I do know that the central figure in it was Adam warlock who is not going to appear in this movie and may never show in the MCU. The Russos have also said they have no interest in making the same story.
I’ve never heard of it and never heard anyone mention it until this thread. I keep a pretty close eye on upcoming releases and i haven’t notices any great hype, nor has it caught my attention. There again, there does seem to be an over-saturation regarding superhero movies to the point where it is difficult for one franchise to grab the attention exclusively.
It isn’t carrying the cultural importance of the original Star Wars series or the Lord Of The Rings, nor even Titanic.
