I’m not sure either of those actually meet the OP specs; they never really “came out”, they were outed by evidence.
And I have a friend (an elected official (Democratic)) who was in Larry Craig’s fraternity at the University of Idaho. He said there were rumors about him even then (though way back then, many of the students from rural Idaho didn’t even understand what the rumors were about.)
I’ve been surprised by pretty much every person I have recognized that was listed in this thread except George Michael. The few that I knew about already (Jim Nabors, Rock Hudson), I was surprised when I found out about them as well. To find that Raymond Burr was gay is a big surprise, but the biggest surprise was to find (in this thread) that Tony Randall wasn’t.
I’m generally pretty oblivious. But in this particular arena, it seems I am even worse. At this point, I’m thinking that *I *might be completely homosexual and not even know it.
Okay, well, then I’m a complete idiot, because I NEVER suspected that George Michael was gay. “It’s cold out there, but it’s warm in bed,” “I want your sex,” – THAT guy?? Constantly surrounded by pretty girls, one of the big sex symbols of the '80s? THAT guy? Nuh-uh, never saw it. In his Wham! days, he was pretty and had fluffy hair and very white teeth… but it was the '80s! Lots of young guys were “pretty” that way! Really! Johnny Depp, Patrick Swayze, lots of musicians…
After he came out, I do remember wondering why you never heard about his latest girlfriend, his latest conquest… but a lot of celebrities try to keep their private lives private, if only so that their fans can continue to happily fantasize about them (as I think somebody here already pointed out).
I think when I was younger, I was more surprised by this stuff, just because I didn’t think about it. Nowadays I don’t care so much, although I am pleasantly surprised that more people seem to feel safer about coming out.
I read something about Hudson that was pretty interesting. I don’t even know if this is possible, but very early in his career, he had a higher-pitched voice. Supposedly he went to the mountains (Aspen, maybe?) and screamed at the top of his lungs until he damaged or “broke” his vocal chords. Supposedly, this made his voice deeper and hid his sexuality from the masses.
I’ll see if I can find my cite for that. I remember reading it and wondering if it was even possible to do.
I remember the Jim Nabors rumors and jokes with Hudson.
One with Hudson in the shower, bending over for the soap, Nabors nails him from behind and says in his Gomer Pyle voice - “SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!”
He’s never come out or been outed or, to my knowledge, spoken to the issue, but there were rumors about him and Hudson (completely unfounded rumors as I mentioned, they in fact didn’t know each other beyond meeting at a Hollywood event or two). However, the fact he’s a bit “sissy” and has never married and collects antiques and the like all lead to speculation he’s gay. He’s also extremely religious so he may be in the NGBVJ (Not Gay by Virtue of Jesus) camp, and is or isn’t I’d be absolutely astonished if he ever came out.
And certainly he had at least one hetero encounter, or else the world wouldn’t have Clay Aiken.
Lots of rockers experimented. What about David Bowie? Maybe he tried to be gay but couldn’t stick with it. I think he just wanted people to wonder if he was gay and he was involved with the Velvet Underground. So, I think he took a walk on the wild side. I saw him do an imitation of Marlene Dietrich. WOW!
Sorry, just saw this. Born in Panama City, but AFAIK not Panamanian (or if he is, he has triple nationality; I do understand he does or did have double from his parents, but back then I think you had to choose at 18). And, well, he’s not saying and I doubt he’ll ever say short of deciding to get married… but, you know what? Bea was totally crazy about him! (She hit the home run by adding Chamberlain, who is one of the very few people who’ve pinged my gaydar on first sight).
He’s been out since at least the early '90s AFAIK (to quote his character from Peter’s Friends, “Oh, how can I put this delicately? It’s just that I’m not really in the vagina business.”). Obviously I don’t know the man but I thought much of his privacy issues derived from his manic-depression, not his homosexuality.
You’re right that he’s been out since the 90s, I think it was around 95 he came out, but before that there was always speculation and he was always “private” when asked. He’s not particularly private now, in fact when it comes to talking about his mental health I’d go as far to say he’s bordering on poster child.
