Has any modern war actually ever been fought to "protect our freedom"

I totally missed that link. I basically Googled it on my phone and tossed it in. Sorry about that.

With such a loose definition of “protecting our freedom”, every war ever has been fought to “protect our freedom”, by every party involved.

Well, it’s a pretty vague concept. Personally, I think my definition tightens things up from the sort of nebulous ‘protect our freedom’ concept that folks have. And just because it’s ‘protect our freedom’ that politicians are supposedly doing doesn’t mean that everything they do in our name is justified. I think Vietnam was an attempt to ‘protect our freedom’ by protecting our interests…and I think it was wrong headed and unjustified. I think that the Iraqi invasion was pretty much a classic example of politicians attempting to ‘protect our freedom’…and I think THAT was wrong headed and unjustified as well. It’s not a get out of jail free card to say that politicians engaged in protecting the US’s overseas interests are ‘protecting our freedom’ as THEY SEE IT. YMMV of course, and if you want to put forth a tighter definition of what you think that vague concept means feel free…it’s what this thread is about, after all.

I think Americas top Marine Major General Smedleys comments of being a gangster looking after American big business for 35 years is the best comment you can get on this subject

War is indeed a racket. I was reading an article about all the bombs dropped on Laos during the Vietnam War last night. Those bombs made somebody or somebodies very rich.
