Has anybody ever successfully fixed a touch screen phone?

My cell phone is touch screen, and it’s a Wallis Simpson (i.e. royally f*cked). What you touch on the screen has little or nothing to do with what is activated- touch the number 5 and you might get the 0 or you might get nothing, the same on everything else.

I took it to the cell phone place but the clerk is a pimple faced wage slave who can’t do anything but offer to send it to the factory, which means I’d be without a cell phone for several days at least. Under the warranty* they’ll replace it but only if it can’t be fixed after being mailed in.

One time when I took out the battery and put it back in it worked fine, but that’s no longer the case.

So, does anybody know any way to recalibrate a touch screen? It responds to the touch, but it’s wildly off.

Thanks for any info.
*Warranty is a word formed by a contraction of the name Warren Beatty; it means "we will replace or repair this in a manner convenient and acceptable to you but only if it was damaged by Warren Beatty in front of witnesses between Monday and Thursday 8am-4:30pm Pacific Time.

I was having this problem and took it to the cell phone store I had bought the phone at. I was shocked at what fixed it. The guy went in and deleted all my saved up text messages. I had never even thought about deleting them. With all that free memory, my phone was back up and running great. Now I delete messages as soon as I read then and haven’t had a problem since. Do you have a ton of text messages saved up on your phone by chance?

Yes- I do- hundreds of them, and most of them unread. I rarely even text- most are from some kind of “Joke of the Day” or “Weather Advisory” sites I’ve somehow gotten subscribed to, so that might be it.

Thanks- I’ll definitely try that.

I hope it works for you. I can’t imagine going without my phone for the amount of time it would take to mail it to some repair place, have them decide whether or not they can fix it, and wait for the repaired phone or replacement to come back. I would probably just buy a new phone first, honestly.

I’m so stealing that phrase.

Sampiro, can you tell us what kind of phone you have, and what OS it runs? There is often a way to recalibrate the touchscreen, depending on if it’s resistive or capacitive.

Has there been any damage to the screen? Did it gradually get worse, or was it a sudden thing?

I’m not sure I understand how the text message thing comes into play - I’m not saying it didn’t happen…just that it’s an odd interaction. I can imagine architectures that would cause it…but I hope it wasn’t one of the products I worked on.

As for the actual OP…yes. I know people who have successfully repaired their own iPhone touch screen. And some of them don’t work for Apple.

If you’re in any Asian country, or even Australia, there are plenty of small mobile phone shops that will do such repairs. I’ve seen shops in Australia: fix cracked screens, water damage, unlock phones and many others. I even replaced the LED lights on my old black and white phone. This may void your warranty though.

My phone has a spot for a memory card to boost the storage. The problem is that text messages can’t access it, they all get slotted into 4MB of 50MB shared memory. Yeah, I feel silly with my 4GB card (at least I can put music on it). It gets flakey if it is close to full.
This may be a slight hijack…You may want to verify those ‘subscription’ text messages. They are frequently premium which means you get billed $1-2 per message even if your plan includes unlimited texting.
