I was listening to NPR and they were doing a short exposé on the Black Twigg Apple. I had never heard of such a fruit - I knew there were apple varieties out there that had become extinct, but I have never heard of this variety. Aparently you can get them now, they are available.
They are a Tennessean variety originally produced in the early 19th century…I’d love to order some! So has anyone ever had one? How are they?
I heard the same story! I’ve never tried one, but the piece made me think there’s a market in Black Twigg calvados. Left Hand of Dorkness and I have been thinking for a while that the next big thing is going to be micro-distilleries. If they’re good cider apples, just imagine the apple brandy you could make from them. Maybe that’s how we’ll make our millions.
They have been making Calvados for a while with the Black Twigg - Apparently it’s quite good. I wonder when micro-distilleries could start popping up. I know there are seasonal ones where I live in New England.
As a semi-hijack, one of my “lotto winning” dreams is to purchase a big plot of land and plant several varieties of antique apples for cider making. Would be awesome!
