Michael Swango is an insane doctor who murdered dozens of people (between 35 and 60) by giving them poisoned food or overdoses of medicine. He managed to get away with this for years without being punished in any way. Despite being fired from multiple hospitals, he forged papers and lied his way into new jobs, apparently a convincing enough liar to cover up his past and get hired again and again. (The scariest thing about the situation is not Swango himself, but the fact that he slipped through the cracks of the system so many times.)
My question is, has anyone ever interviewed Swango about these murders? Either on video or in text form? If so, where can this be seen/watched?
I’ve never seen a published interview with Swango. A long time ago when he was in trouble in one of his residencies, I think that a TV network program (20/20?) interviewed him. The book “Blind Eye” (an excellent account of his case) mentions that the author tried to interview him but was turned down.
Note: Swango was never found to be “insane” by any accepted medical/legal definition. The consensus is that he’s a sociopath who behaved bizarrely, but knew the difference between right and wrong and functioned well in society, at least when he was not poisoning people.
Poisoners are a lot scarier to me than other kinds of serial killers. There’s just something cold and passionless about the method of killing that is extremely disturbing to me.
I met this man one day at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, VA. It was brief, but I remember him offering me a cup of coffee to which I replied, no thank you I don’t drink coffee. One night while watching TV, I saw his face on the screen & was a bit shocked by what I was hearing, then I thought back to that day & couldn’t help but wonder if I would have been a victim had I drank coffee. It was & still is very unnerving.
You can watch the videos about him on You Tube.
