One the one hand, both SF and porn are heavily into fantasy situations, and there’s obviously room for a lot of overlap. Certainly many have tried. But in practice it seems like you always get either salacious SF or porn with long boring interludes. Has anyone ever seen it done it well? Or if not, the best attempts you’ve seen?
SF is about ideas. I’ve read plenty of SF speculating about sex and erotica, or with erotic themes, but good luck trying to masturbate to it. Same reason you don’t get full-penetration sex in the raciest Hollywood movies: It’s not just a matter of censorship, it’s that porn doesn’t mix well with an actual story. Their purposes barely intersect.
Best effort so far: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesh_Gordon
I suppose Barbarella wasn’t a complete waste of time. No, wait, strike that, it was. Flesh Gordon? At least it was funny.
The problem is that you don’t watch porn for the same reason that you watch non-porn, so mixing the two is rarely successful. Sure, we all wish we could watch Pierce Brosnan get dirty with Michelle Yeoh, but if they actually did it would change the movie. You’d either watch it for the porn scene or for the rest, never both.
Of Alien Bondage by John Cleve is notable for having aliens… and bondage. And it’s the first in a series.
Ooh, I get a chance to post the first good answer to a question.
I give you Lexx.
I dunno, that whole series was one big cock-tease. Stanley wants to nail Zev, or Xev, or the plant-chick, or any woman, really, but something almost always gets in the way. It was more frustration than anything else.
Then again, I didn’t see the last season when they got to Earth. Maybe it picked up.
Sexy, but if you think that’s porn I’d be worried that you were related to chela
The Leather Godesses of Phobos, text adventure game perhapse came closest. And the Gor novels are somewhat Sci Fi (though I consider them rubbish as fiction or porn). The Heavy Metal Magazine and asociated films come close as well.
I’ve heard of something called Space Sluts in the Slammer but I’ve never seen it and can’t even find it on IMDb. Was it ever released?
If you dig softcore, there’s Beach Babes from Beyond: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106366/ But SF it ain’t.
And yes, they made a sequel, even worse than the first: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112466/
First of all, Stan got more than his share on one particular occasion. And in Season Four,
Xev gets it on with a chick, Bunny (Partricia Zentilli). She also sort of gets it from Kai. Even the Lexx gets some action!
and there was nudity in all seasons, at least if you don’t watch it on the Sci-FI Channel. Season Four is worth watching. It was my first season and I think the best. No, it’s not really porn. I mean, if you really want porn you’re lucky to find anything resembling a story except for maybe some European films.
Stanley did finally get some during the Fire/Water season, when they visited the settlement on Water where “they have sex, sex, sex all day long”. And a good thing too: I was telling myself “If Stanley can’t get laid here, he might as well cut it off.”
Chasey Lain (Wikipedia, SFW) was in sort of a sci-fi/porn video early in her career called The Original Wicked Woman (IMDB, SFW) that I thought was kind of clever. Basically, she plays the part of a time-traveling alien who is attempting to change the course of human history for the better by having sex with key historical figures.
She starts out by arriving on Earth before Adam is created, and seducing him (Key dialogue from this scene: Adam sees Chasey and exclaims, “I thought I was supposed to get here first!”)
That doesn’t solve whatever problem she’s working on, so she tries different characters through history. She gets Cleopatra to hook up with Marc Antony. She gets busy in prison with Joan of Arc, the night before Joan’s execution. She has a threesome with some important French couple.
All of these attempts at influencing history failed. That led to her computer finally determining that the most influential individual on Earth was a particular female pop singer in the 20th century. This singer happens to like girls, but she’ll only do the nasty with a girl who has huge tits. So the computer alters Chasey’s physiology. This is what I thought was clever - they worked Chasey’s boobjob into the story.
Unfortunately, I thought Chasey looked way better before the “enhancements”.
Boomtown. Which I remember clearly because the line ‘In Boomtown we have sex all the time!’ always came into my head when I heard about the TV series Boomtown.
He failed to get laid in the brothel, that one time, and you’d think that’d be even easier than Boomtown. (And it occurs…the guy running the brothel is played by the same actor as Fifi from Fire/Water. Were they supposed to be the same character, or were they just recycling the actor, I wonder… I don’t remember if it ever came up, and I can’t find anything that confirms one way or the other.)
Other fun sci-fi sorta-porn: Emanuelle: Queen of the Galaxy - its ludicrous as science fiction, and only cinemax level porn, but it’s a lot of fun, on both levels. (I like to call it ‘Shape changing space amoeba porn.’)
There are some SF porn books; back in the 60s the Essex House imprint tried to combine the two genres. Philip Jose Farmer wrote several books in the line, including Blown. Ian Watson wrote Orgasmachine for the line, but it folded before it was published.
Samuel R. Delaney wrote the porn novel Hogg; I don’t know about it’s SF content, but he has been quoted that he tried to be in a state of arousal as he wrote it. Delany’s Dhalgren, while not pornographic in intent, has some extremely graphic three-way sex scenes.
I think it might work best in the short story format. Keith Laumer’s short story “In the Barn” being about equal parts SF story and twisted sex fantasy. But Phillip Jose Farmer’s “The Flesh” was novel length and had definite porn elements. And of course, there’s the whole Gor series, which I think did about as good a job as could possibly be done of combining softcore bondage porn and heroic fantasy.
I’d disagree with that; I think that there’s a great deal of intersection in their intentions, if not in the subject matter: there’s a Kurt Vonnegut quote along the lines that what SF and pornography have in common is not sex but fantasies of an impossibly hospitable universe.
Well, of course, there’s always Alpha Squad 7: Lady Nocturne: A Tek Jansen Adventure. Unless you’re a Commie.
I think you’re referring to a Piers Anthony story. I’m not sure about calling it a sex fantasy (well, certain people might find it such, but once you start dealing with kinkiness, anything can be a sex fantasy).
You’re right, a Google check reveals it is Piers Anthony. I think it’s a little closer to mainstream fantasies than you would be comfortable with, which is part of what gives it its SF shock factor, but I don’t wanna give any plot points away to a twisty little story.
