Has anyone ever driven in Poland?

So it’s a bit of an odd question but I am going to Pland for the Euro’s in 2012. Thinking about driving from Prague to Gdansk which is about 486 miles. Im hearing some very bad stories about Polish drivers and the roads. One person told me it will take 14 to 16 hours to get there.

So, are the roads really that bad? Are Polish drivers that dangerous? Thanks!

I drove across Poland in May 2004 (this was during my The Hague - Moscow drive and back, but that’s another story).

In my experience, at that time, the roads were not very good. They were serviceable, but they had grooves that at times were rather noticeable, apparently due to constant heavy lorry traffic.

There was a section of high-speed motorway not far from Poznan that was quite nice. I imagine that, by now, that particular motorway has been extended. The rest of the roads were 2-way roads with one lane in each direction and, as mentioned before, sometimes rather heavily grooved.

The drivers themselves were OK. I didn’t encounter particularly crazy drivers over there.

This was in 2004, 8 years ago. It possibly will be different nowadays, hopefully for the better.

I did several hundred miles of driving in Poland in 2003. Roads were not superb but mostly decent, drivers generally competent, people very friendly, women conspicuously attractive and fashionably dressed, beer commendable. I’d return on very small provocation.

Note that a native English speaker has a poor chance of getting the pronunciation of many place names right without a bit of language study. E.g. Wrocław is pronounced “Vrotswaf”.

**Has anyone ever driven in Poland? **

This is just a WAG, but I’ll go out on a limb, take a shot in the dark, and say yes, someone has driven in Poland.

I heard it’s really difficult with all the poles in the way.

Yes, yes. One to hold the wheel, and 19 to rotate the car. Very amusing.

I don’t know about Poland but the drivers in Prague are the scariest I have ever seen, good luck on getting out of the city

Thanks guys. This might be some adventure. Might just stick to Berlin-Poland-Berlin-Poland.

I’ve driven in Poland and the Czech Republic, including around Prague (though never in the city itself) - and pretty much everywhere else in Europe. No problem. Nobody crazy really, no more than anywhere else. Better roads than Switzerland (though that’s not saying anything, you can see where they got the idea for the cheese as soon as you cross the border), not as good as Germany. Maybe round about Belgium.
