Forgive my ignorance, but what’s a hangnail?

A hangnail is the skin flap near the edge of your fingernail that catch on things and bleed when torn off. OUCH! I have them ALL the time. I would REALLY like to know what causes them. Can we get a scientific explanation AND solution for this problem please?

I thought everyone on the planet over the age of 4 has had a hangnail. I guess not!

Has anyone ever HAD a hangnail? How about “Has anyone NEVER had a hangnail?” Now that might be interesting.
