That’s called a shooting. Or attempted shooting, depending on the subsequent condition of the other gunless person.

I’m kind of amused that an Accidental Martyr has stepped into a gunfight between lost4life and myself.
I’ve been in full-scale-combat exercises but I wouldn’t compare it. As intense and crazy-stimulating it was, I wasn’t afraid for my life. Just my hearing at one point (I swear that soldier threw that arty sim right at me!).
Also was the enemy in a room-clearing/hostage ex. I can report that I was pretty tense, sweaty and high on adrenaline as I heard them getting room by room closer, but I wasn’t scared for my life.
I have to imagine that the real thing is different.
All right, all right. The last two were just shootings. But the first was a real live shoot out. Three guys shooting at each other across Burnside Ave. And I was there.
I had a guy pull a gun on me, point it at my chest and ask me “What do you think, if I shoot you right now?” in a Jamaican patois. Time didn’t exactly slow down but almost 25 years later I can remember an amazing amount of detail, total sensory overload.

No, the “Ranger” is from something else. I never saw much sense in jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. I was in the 7th Cav. (Garry Owen!) in II Corps in Nam. You’re using some polysyllabic words there. Does “You’d be surprised at what you can get used to.” satisfy as an answer?
Because some stuff you can’t really explain to those who haven’t experienced it. It doesn’t work. And some stuff you don’t care to talk about because that means you have to remember it.
