After five years of faithful service, it’s time for the Fantastic Plastic, a.k.a. my hormonal IUD, to be replaced. I’ve been very happy with it, so I didn’t hesitate for a second about getting another.
My only question is what insertion is going to be like the second time around. The first time I had a week or so of irregular cramps and bleeding. Will it be lighter this time, since I’m used to it and since the lining of my uterus will already be thinner? Or will it be about the same?
The nurse already said over the phone that the same restrictions apply: a week of no tub baths, no swimming, and no horizontal tangoing. But I forgot to ask about the bleedy bit and I can’t work up the guts to call back about just that. Everything I’ve found on the 'net concerns initial insertion…
Quickly popping into this thread again in case anyone else was wondering: the second time was a picnic. Probably a couple tablespoons of blood in the first hour after insertion, and some few spots and the odd cramp over the next two days. Easy peasy. I can live with that every five years
i have a second mirena inserted since thursday and i am still bleeding im wondering if this is normal. my period stopped about a year into the first insertion and i havent had one yet. hoping with this one will be the same situation but much faster as far as my period leaving me alone. any advice or information will be greatly appreaciated!! thanks
If it’s fairly normal period-level bleeding, it’s probably fine. My period stopped after the first month of my first Mirena, then crept back as heavy spotting over the last few months before the second insertion. I bled like a stuck hog the first couple of days with the second insertion, although it was no heavier than what my periods had been before the first Mirena. After the first couple days, the bleeding tapered off.
My dr mentioned the no sex thing, but explained it was more due to the risk that the iud was not inserted correctly or rejected, so i believevit’s because of the risk of pregnancy more than anything. Then again my mother also fell pregnant with an iud (in the late 70s) so it’s never foolproof!
Maybe they’ve changed their advice in six years since the OP. Perhaps flodnak will return to tell us about her third IUD!
I had my 1st removed and second inserted all in one go. A very light amount of bleeding for me, about two hours of godawful cramps, then back to normal.
laurieam, I highly recommend going back to your doctor and having them take a look. Woman seem to have all sorts of bleeding on insertion, from next to none to a few days, but if it’s very heavy or worrying you I really really suggest going back to the doctor.
I think the instructions I received (from Mirena themselves) is that if you’re on your period when it’s inserted, you’re immediately covered in terms of birth control. If not, you should wait…7 days I think it was.
I know it’s a first one, but I asked my doctor about any restrictions after the insertion and there were none. I was cleared for sex, swimming, tennis, and tampons.
I’m hoping insertion on the second one is easier than the first - the first hurt like a bitch! But totally worth it!!!
