Has anyone not heard of Adam Sandler?

I think I’ve heard his name before, but, beyond that, I know nothing. Couldn’t pick him out of a lineup except by pure chance. (ETA: Huh. Apparently he’s Sherlock in the British series. I actually have seen a couple episodes of that, but I had no idea of the actor’s name.)

These I’m drawing a complete blank on. But I’m terrible with actor names (I couldn’t tell you the names of any other actor but Seth Rogen in The Interview, and I just watched that a couple days ago.) So, yeah, everyone has some gaping holes in their knoweldge. Still, for someone cruising IMDB, I find that unusual. It’d be as if I was cruising the music boards and didn’t know who, I dunno, Daft Punk was or something.

I recall a couple of years ago people at work were talking about Kim Kardashian and I said that I couldn’t differentiate one hot celebrity blonde from another. Although I knew the name I wouldn’t have known who she was if she was talking to me in a bar. At least I now know she isn’t a blonde.

I only learned of Adam Sandler a few months ago when I watched some film about a remote control with my grandson.
I wish I had evaded that particular horror.

Never heard of ESPN previously either. Thought at first it might be anti-skid magic in the car

Access IMDB frequently but never post there - only ever look up the cast in films as I never recognise them - male actors anyway (boring) Then forget them again.

Brit living in La-La-Land.

I’m about there, although I didn’t have a mental image of how he looks. I did have this idea that he isn’t a serious actor? So maybe does only comedy? I never think comedies are funny so I don’t watch them. I have never seen him in a film, and I have not watched television since 1972, with the exception of a few (like five) shows I’ve watched on netflix.

I know another person who has even less idea of who he is: my husband. He doesn’t know who any actors are, after about 1965. I am positive he has never heard his name.

Yeah, he’s pretty much well-known for fairly sophomoric humor (with the exception, off the top of my head, of Punch Drunk Love, which is more of a quirky romantic dramedy, where he plays a much deeper and more serious character than he is known for.)

I’m not an Adam Sandler fan, but I loved Punch Drunk Love. He was playing the same character he always does, but a kind of “real life” version. It’s like those paintings and photos people do where they render a Disney princess or other cartoon character as an actual human. Paul Thomas Anderson did the same thing to Adam Sandler’s man-child persona.

That’s a pretty good description. It’s a believable toned-down nuanced version of his usual character. He was perfectly cast for that role. I don’t know how or why I ended up seeing it, but I was surprised at how good he was in it.

One need not pay heed to what passes for popular entertainment culture these days to still be literate and well-informed on science, politics and human issues. I personally tend to recuse such pop culture information which don’t interest or engage me.

I’ve heard of this Sandler guy but doubt I could name a single movie he’s been in. I am blissfully ignorant about many other ‘famous’ people, failing to recognize their names when mentioned by others.

And SNL’s heyday was when it had Belushi, Ackroyd, Radner, Murray, etc. on it.

Well, we have, but they’re a completely different candy!

American Smarties are like little sugar tablets, whereas in Canada Smarties are kind of like M&Ms, right?

How are we supposed to explain Adam Sandler to old people?
Is he more like Buddy Hackett or Joey Bishop?

I was wondering who Allison Janney was and why everyone was so worked up about her and getting awards. Then it was explained she had a really good nude scene. But I don’t have those pay channels so I wouldn’t know.

To be fair, foolguinea said during his, meaning Sandler’s heyday.

I had never heard of Benedict Cumberhatch until it was announced he was cast in a role in Star Trek Into Darkness. Then I found it he was the new Khan. I still haven’t seen anything else he’s done.

If you only see one Adam Sandler film, it should be Reign Over Me. It’s a serious drama. He plays a successful dentist whose family was on one of the airliners flying from Boston to New York on Sept. 11, 2001. He has a serious mental breakdown as a result, becoming a recluse in his house. He becomes obsessive-compulsive with painting his kitchen over and over. Don Cheadle plays his old college roommate who tries to draw him out and get him interested in living again. Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland, and John DeLancie also have nice roles in it. It has received mostly favorable reviews.

Pfft. I only watch Mythbusters to disagree with it, and Alex Sandler’s “zaniness” is far too puerile for my tastes.

The guy in Brooklyn 9-9, right?

And 50 First Dates, Spanglish and Funny People. The first and third were great. Spanglish was kind of tedious but is remarkable in that Sandler is the most normal person in the film.

My father, who is highly intelligent but does not use computers, recently asked me what Wikipedia was. I told my brother, and he replied, “He’ll probably ask Mom to print it all out.”

:stuck_out_tongue:

Hi-C was heavily advertised when I was a kid, and while I know it’s sold now, I don’t personally hear much about it. However, I don’t have children myself.

I wonder how many pages it would take to print it all out.

Nah, you guys are thinking of that wrestler who died a couple years back, “Machismo Man” Randy Sampson.

There would be no space left in their house, nor enough time in any of our lifetimes to read it. :stuck_out_tongue:
