I like to think I’m Canadian. And I like to think I enjoy humourous literature. So I looked at the list of books that have won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, and I just about came up blank. I think I’ve read parts of two books:
[ul][li]Just Add Water And Stir by Pierre Berton – We had a copy of this up at our cabin. When I was a kid, I leafed through it once out of curiosity and/or sheer boredom; at least the name “Pierre Berton” had some name-recognition factor. It’s a collection of essays and musings by Mr. Berton circa 1959. Even in the early '80s a lot of it seemed very dated, so I doubt it would be any fresher today.[/li][li]Jake and the Kid by Whoa Mitchell – One of my parents got one of the “Jake and the Kid” books out from the library, and again I was moved by a combination of name-recognition and boredom to read some or all of it. (Kids today with their internets and video games definitely have it easy!)[/li][/ul]
Most of the books I’ve never even heard of, although I’ve seen plenty of copies of Arthur Black’s books displayed in Coles back in the day.
Can anyone recommend any gems from the Stephen Leacock Medal list?
