Has Anyone Read These Books? Are They Any Good?

Oh, I don’t mind “waving, drowning and general depression,” it’s that stream-of-consciousness crap I can’t stand. Give me a PLOT, dammit! I think I’ll look for that Tom Sharpe book Rackensack recommended.

My deepest apologies (said with a tone of false sincerity). I neither enjoy nor often read “girly” books. I prefer adventures and history, so I guess you could say I was “Haggard.”

Well, they didn’t have that Sharpe book, so I picked up a Booth Tarkington I’m pretty sure I’ve never read, “Kate Fennigate.” Booth’s usually pretty reliable.

Thanks for warning me about Stevie Smith!

Sorry about that. I know he’s not that well known over here in the States, and our local library, despite serving a population of a half million people, doesn’t have a single one of Sharpe’s books, but I figured the main branch of the NYPL would manage these things better – especiallly since one of his novels (Porterhouse Blue) was made into a BBC miniseries that PBS broadcast a few years ago.

Wilt was also made into a film, with Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones. About ten years ago, I think. They toned it down considerably, though, to get a 15 rating.

Eve…shhhhhhh with the sweet ‘stuff’…it goes against the psycho-bitch reputation I’m working so hard on…

I’m off to the bookstore…Theda or Jean?..how do I choose?..
