Probably more than a decade ago, all the Baskin-Robbins in town were apparently bought out and replaced by the lamely-named “Kaleidoscoops”, pretty much overnight. They were a pale shadow of the B-Rs. Even though everything was ostensibly the same, it somehow just wasn’t.
Interestingly, a few B-Rs have sprouted up in newly-built locations, so someone new may have bought the local franchise license. There’s one in a small strip mall next to our local Wal-Mart.
There are at least six B-Rs in Spokane County. Since the late 70s, I think about three B-Rs have closed. Two were in rather depressed areas of town and another was in a strip mall that had a DQ at the other end of the parking lot.
Where I live, I’ve seen several shut down (including one that was close to my house). Often, this is because the corporate/franchise policy is to either extensively remodel or replace their DQ stores after 35-40 years. The one near my house was too small and it didn’t have enough room to expand so they moved to a new location two miles away.
Not only are all the Baskin-Robbins gone from Minnesota (just where are you supposed to go after a piano recital?), so are all Dunkin’ Donuts. It used to be that those 2 were every where.
It’s actually kind of hard to find a good donut in the Twin Cities now. The gas stations selling their own stuff seems to have taken over most of that market. Heck, I think we are even without a Krispy Kreme now.
I was told by the owner of the Evanston BR that BR corporate had decided that they wanted to focus on free standing stores and combo DD/BR stores. In my observation, freestanding and combo stores are still around but I rarely see a strip mall or corner front location anymore.
I know of one that closed for sure in Bangkok, but that was because the entire area of Siam Square was being torn down for new construction, and everyone had to leave.
You mean the Bangkok House? Far as I know, that’s still in the basement where it’s always been. We usually come up Limestone rather than Rose, so it’s been about a year since I was actually past that corner, but last I knew the BR had been replaced by another ice cream place. Or maybe it was a little sandwich place and the new ice cream parlor was in the spot next door…
Pikesville, Maryland, in the Greenspring Shopping Center. It was there for many years and it closed. The Carvels in Pikesville closed as well, which was unfortunate, because I liked Carvels better.
There was a Baskin Robbins near my office that closed not too long ago. Older Vietnamese couple ran the joint for about 20 years. The landlord decided not to renew their lease. He was trying to re-develop the center and got a higher paying tenant in there.
