I was wondering if anyone knew what song was that that Holly Hunter was singing to little Nathan Junior.
It was right after the scene where H.I. was having his first nightmare of the Lone Biker of the Apocalypse. He wakes up in terror and finds his wife singing a song to the baby. She says “Nathan Junior was just having a nightmare.”
The only line i remember to the song was “For I did murder that dear little girl…”
I think it’s “Down by the Willow Garden.” One of the famous murder ballads beloved by hillbillies like the Holly Hunter character in that film.
You can hear a very nice version of it on MURDER, MISERY, AND THEN GOODNIGHT, an album by Kristin Hersh of grim traditional folksongs she sings to her little sons.
Yes, the other songs are in the same vein. (Hee hee hee.) I bought it several months ago, and while I can’t say I spin it all that often, I’m glad I have it. Her version of “What Will We Do With the Baby-O” is truly demented.
Here’s the link. Listen to the samples. Read the reviews. You decide.
Several of the songs in Raising Arizona including the “Wheeeee-eeeee-ee-ee-eeeee-eeeee-oooooo-oo” song are pieces of classical music which have been countrified. One is Stravinski’s Petrushka and another is the Ode to Joy.
I had just finished listening to the former of the two pieces when I turned on the TV and saw Raising Arizona, then I heard the music and nearly fell out of my chair laughing.
