Has anyone tried the South Beach diet?

Pardon me if there has already been a thread on this. Any success stories? Complaints? Ideas for snacks other than nasssty lowfat cheese?
I’ve been on it for 6 whole hours and I’m doing great so far. I just got an email from an old college pal who’s going to be in town in three weeks and hasn’t seen me for ten years, so I’ve got lots motivation going, too.

I read the whole book twice (well, not the recpies, just the instructional part) and I love the philosophy behind it. It’s absolutely wonderful because you begin losing weight immediately, but move away from a strict diet regimen and just learn to eat what’s good for you.

Unfortunately I quit during the induction phase because of the general awful-feeling-ness. I’d low-carbed before, but it’s wasn’t anything like this…so I gave up, and have been trying to adhere as much as possible to the stage 3 phase of the diet. Not the same, I know, but I know I’m being healthier. And I am slowly losing weight, but I’ve also been exercising more, so that should be expected.

Recipes…hmm, let me think (I’m at work and don’t have them in front of me). I’ll be back.

I bought the book, but I haven’t had a chance to sit down and read it yet. I read an article about it a few weeks ago (can’t remember where, so no cite, sorry) and it sounded like something I could live with. Your enthusiasm after 6 whole hours is inspiring!

The book is interesting, and a pretty quick read. I though it was smart and amusing the way he included warts-and-all testimonials from various people who tried the diet. One of the things that attracted me to it was the effort they seemed to put into understanding what makes people succeed or fail over the long term.

I’ve never tried low-carb before, but I don’t generally have much of a sweet tooth, so I’m hoping it won’t be too painful. We’ll see how it goes. I already know that I’ll be cheating on the night of July 4th. We’re going to a barbecue on the Harbor where the menu is burgers, baked beans, corn, potato salad, and ice cream. I’ll look at it as an opportunity to see how my body reacts to falling off the wagon.

I too bought the book (yesterday) and am about a thrid of the way through the actual text. I skimmed the meal plans and recipes and they look do-able. My past weight loss successes have been with Weight Watchers and I’ve been attempting that the last 3 months but it’s not working. Or should I say I’m not working at it. I seem to have lost my enthusiasm for it so decided I need something new. Basically the SBD cuts out carbs (in the form of “starch”), milk and fruit for the first 2 weeks then gradually reintroduces them. What attracted me is that it tells you what to eat. I need a plan that doesn’t allow for a whole lot of choices. I don’t know if I buy into the insulin resistance theory but any eating plan that doesn’t allow chips and cookies works for me!

Well, if its low carb then thats why it works. I avoided all the diet fads and books and simply cut much of the cabs from my diet. No pasta, bread, rice, sugars…two months of that and I lost 40 lbs. I gained about 10 back so far, so next week its salad’s for lunch again, but really to maintain weight its just a matter of cutting carbs for me.

I’ve got a 2-hour flight this evening, plus the wait in the airport, and I’ve packed my copy of the book in my carry-on. Once I get home from vacation, I plan to start, assuming the plan lives up to my expectations.
