Has BBC Prime been censored?

I noticed about a month ago that BBC Prime has started censoring out profanity and obscenity from its programs. It’s a shame really because one thing I really appreciate about BBC programming (compared to US network TV for example) is its honesty and realism. I checked out the BBC Prime website, but don’t see any reference or explanation for it.

Anyone have any information on this? By the way, I am living in Switzerland, in case it is a country-specific decision by BBC.

What programmes have you noticed this in? It’s possible that some were censored in their original form, particularly documentaries etc. which would be shown at ‘family’ viewing times.

In the UK we have the ‘nine o’clock watershed’. It is assumed that kids will be up and about before 9pm so there is a limit on the ‘language’ used as well as the ‘sex and violence’ on show. After nine o’clock it is parnets responsibility to monitor what their children miught see/hear.

As I understand it ‘home-grown’ shows censor themselves in line with the watershed policy, which applies to all channels (terrestrial at least) not just the BBC, but I think I have seen some films cut slightly to allow them to be shown in an early evening slot.

Maybe BBC Prime is getting caught up in a confusion of different time zones …

I can’t really remember to be honest. It was on some of the regular dramas (not movies). Perhaps Mersey Beat, Clocking Off, that sort of thing.

Let me just add, I love BBC programs. I grew up on US TV and the difference is remarkable. The acting is better, the storylines are much deeper, the episodes are longer (no commercials), and your actresses are more attractive (not silicone beautiful, but real strike-you-in-the chest beauty). And this is just on BBC Prime, which my Brit friends tell me is a poor cousin to the other UK channels.

It is not normal for dramas - or movies for that matter - to be censored in this way. If the script included swearing then the show would have been designed for after the watershed and that is when they would be shown. Usually only swearing on documentry or un-scripted talk shows would be censored if shown before 9pm. Must be a BBC Prime thing.

Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.
