Has my PC been hit with a virus?

Last night I was surfing the web with my Netscape Navigator. Three times while I was online, my Internet Explorer started opening up. I clicked it off each time, but later, after I had stepped away from the computer, I came back to find IE had opened, and the window said something like “click here for a chance to win $1,000,000.” Naturally, I didn’t, and I disconnected.

What happened? Has my hard drive been infected with something? I didn’t go online today (from home), and I didn’t notice any problems while writing and game-playing for a bit.

Probably not a virus, but it could be some sort of nasty Javascript.

I’m guessing it’s the same type of thing that happens when I’m looking at porno sites. When I close the porn windows, IE opens up on its own advertising even more porn.

I wouldn’t worry about it.

When people want to get your attention, they can setup the script to open a hundred windows. Or everytime you close an ad, 2 more ads appear, and over and over again. Sites to stay away from - Porn Sites, Warez Sitez, and last but not least, Angelfire.

But Sua was using Netscape, and then IE opened up spontaneously. I don’t know of any JavaScript commands that could do this, nor Java.

Now AcitveX, on the other hand, could. It’s completely insecure and you should be very wary when installing any new AcitveX-based plug-in for your browser.

I’m having the same problem, same type of message pops up too–“click here for a chance to win $1,000,000” or something like that. It doesn’t matter what web page I am viewing either, because it has popped up while I was browsing these message boards. It has been happening about once an hour for a week now.

Low and behold, it just popped up! It says:

You’ve been selected to Play for a Billion dollars! (That’s right, we said billion!)
Click here to play for FREE now!

The initial loading address was something to the effect of adclick, but the address bar is now showing http://www.grab.com/popup/tmp-5.asp

Any ideas about what is causing this to pop up?

There’s a new one I got yesteday that was in an email
supposedly from “Mailer Daemon”.
So it was supposed to look like it came from my email service as a regular “failed to deliver” error message.
But this one was different, and had an attachment of an Excel file. Since I don’t use excel, I knew it was a virus, and deleted without trying to open it.

Okay. You set your computer so that IE is the browser of preference. But you use Netscape anyway. When a script calls for the browser of preference, up comes IE. It’s perfectly fine.

That’s exactly what I got on my screen.

I still find it odd, because every other time browser windows have spontaneously opened up, the new window has always been the browser I’ve been using up 'til then. Furthermore, every other time I’ve had new browser windows pop up while surfing, it happened when I had just gone to a new website. This time, it kept on happening even though I was just looking at one Web page.

This sounds iffy. If you’re concerned, (and I would be, for one), do a virus scan. If you don’t have a virus scanner (and you should), download a trial of Norton AntiVirus (www.symantec.com). Does it happen if you’ve rebooted and not visited any unusual sites? (say, reboot, browse here only, and stay here) If that happens, something is not right, and needs to be fixed.

Got a bunch of virus-loaded e-mails last week with the subject line Ha Ha Ha and a seven dwarfs joke. I didn’t open any attachments, so I wasn’t worried.

Then yesterday, everything I opened popped up an Illegal Operation message. The McAfee virus scan found nothing. The Dell tech was nice, but his suggestions didn’t help.

I finally used a boot disk and reloaded Windows. Seems to be working okay today.

Anyone know if dirt causes problems? I just noticed lots of gunky dusty stuff in the vents, and am wondering how much has gotten inside.

From what I know, dust and lint in the vents can cause problems because the computer doesn’t get the ventilation that it needs, and it gets too hot inside. You can get air-in-a-can in a lot of places that you can blow it out with. I usually bring mine out onto the porch when I do it, otherwise the dust just floats around and ends up right back where it started.

I had Windows crashing suddenly and reagularly some time ago and reinstalled Windows to no avail.
Blowing the chassis with compressed air, including removing cards and blasting the slot pins, worked.

I’ve ran a virus check. Nothing. I signed on, came straight here, and it pops up. I got the courage to click on the button though, and it takes you to a game board where you pick 7 numbers and enter your address. The window it produces is huge. When you close the window, another one pops up thanking you for visiting and says click here for a free gift. Another window pops up and your free “gift” is the Gator program.

The dang thing is still popping up! Maybe I need to clear out my temp files? This is really getting annoying.

Atropos, under Netscape:edit:preferences:advanced turn off java & java script, then try that site again & see what happens.
