Has the sexual harassment/molestation scandal spread to countries other than the US

It would seem that every day in the US there is a new, prominent man accused of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Is this happening in other countries, now too? Do you expect it to hit your country any time soon, if it hasn’t already?

I think Italy is immune.

Which is a good point. Are there countries where most people don’t understand why this is such a big deal in the US? Other than Kazakhstan, of course!

Alabama.

I remember when the CBC’s Radio One division had a huge scandal when numerous women publicly came out accusing a famous presenter (Jian Ghomeshi) of sexual assault. Does the entertainment industry simply exist outside of the boundaries of workplace conduct that holds true for ALL of modern western society?

Power imbalances exist in all workplaces, but assault appears rife in this industry.

I believe there’s been a scandal in Britain with sexual harassment accusations against MPs recently. I can’t be arsed to read the news about it, but I’ve seen a few tweets from British accounts I follow.

Most countries aren’t as big on recreational outrage as the United States.

In Australia I would say no - I haven’t particularly noticed an uptick in sex abuse allegations post-Weinstein. However, we’ve already had plenty of historic sex-abuse scandals come out of the closet within the last couple of years, so I suspect any particularly egregious abusers have already had their heads roll.

Rolf Harris went to jail a couple of years ago (in the UK, so it only marginally counts - but it was big news here), and the Robert Hughes case (actor accused of molesting his child co-star) generated a lot of interest. There’s been a big scandal running all year about a major media company exec and his affair with one of his subordinates - and of course pedophile priests and, to a lesser extent pedophile school teachers have been in and out of the news for the last couple of decades, and the charges against Archbishop Pell are a few months old.

I notice this morning that Gary Ablett, who’s probably the most well-known football player in the country, has just come under investigation for historic abuse allegations. I don’t know if there’s any Weinstein effect at work there, or if it’s just an outworking of the general ‘clean up football culture’ pressure that’s been on for a couple of years

July of this year the former Premier and current Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in the Cayman Islands was arrested in Florida on a misdemeanor battery charge for allegedly groping a casino worker.

The prosecutor declined to press charges. The politician remains in his role as the Speaker.

I’ve not seen similar allegations made in Cayman about other politicians or prominent individuals.

didn’t a woman that was in a soap opera in Australia get convicted for molesting one of the kids she worked with 20 years after the fact?

if I remember correctly it was after she was accused of something sexual by another teenager and the first victim spoke up and she ended up going down for both…

Is the spread of it in the US now tied into how the issue blew up in the UK a couple years ago?

I assumed the election of Trump combined with the outing of a bunch of sex offenders in the UK is why the US is starting to take it seriously.

Norway’s having massive revelations of sexual harassment in broadcasting and TV/film/theater, which are obviously inspired by the wave in the US.

Perhaps not the best wording…

It’s going strong in Britain. The Defense Minister, Michael Fallon, was forced to resign. Kevin Spacey did a lot of sexual harassment in Britain too (when he was artistic director of the Old Vic theatre) as did Harvey Weinstein.

Here in Montreal, Quebec, we have a big comedy festival, the Just For Laughs festival, and the head of the festival was recently let go because of multiple sexual harassment complaints. Something similar happened to a guy who was recently running for mayor - he dropped out of the race because it was revealed he sexually harassed people.

So it goes on in my part of Canada.

Here’s the case in question: Maggie Kirkpatrick, Prisoner star 'The Freak', found guilty of child sex abuse

There might be some RO going on, but many, many of the men being charged are serious predators.

Same for Spain. Some of the Spanish articles involve Spanish actresses in the US or models working internationally, as well.

And the comments often involve some troll accusing the women in question of having earned their fame on their backs. They could just be having a bad case of “them grapes are green”, of course, but what I have problems believing is that there are people nowadays who believe the only way a woman can have any kind of career is through prostitution.

Imagine how much shit we’d all be in, if something really mattered.

Yes, and since it’s in media, the media are vewwy, vewwy concerned about it. To the extent that they ignore incidents in other sectors, plus readily available scientific research on harassment to have sufficient airtime to wring their hands properly.
