I’ve just been laughing my ass off reading this thread. Every time you hit rock bottom, you manage to grab another shovel.
You just don’t get it, do you? You said you could do magic yourself, independent of anything the skeptics said. Therefore, you must prove that you, in particular, can do magic. Nothing else matters. Belief doesn’t matter. Anyone can believe anything they like. But you said you can physically perform magic. It is up to you to prove that you yourself can cast a spell, except that you obviously can’t. I think you know this, and you didn’t expect anyone to call your bluff. All you’ve got left is bluster. But please, continue blustering all you like. I’m enjoying this thread; all the valid points everyone is making are creating a nifty air show as they go flying over your head.
Techchick68 had harassed me via e-mail in the past(and was doing so at the time from two accounts). You don’t know what you are talking about, and it shows.
The only thing I see going over head is the fact that the onus is on the original OP to disprove magick. But of course, that would mean this little witch hunt would be at an end, and you’d hate to lose the focus for your bile.
Point of view? What the fuck are you talking about. His “point of view” is that you claimed you could perform a fucking magic trick. You then claim that the burden of proof is somehow on him to show that you cannot, when you, yourself, are the one who made the claim and refuse to back it up?

Should this actually occur, the end result will not be tying you to a stake and lighting you on fire. This began with statements in a GD thread, which jab1 started a pit thread over. I was not the reason for jab1 starting the Pit thread, where he did state that magick is not real. He stated it wasn’t real without and proof or cites, and then put it to me that I had to prove that it was real. At that point, Czarcasm joins in. Much nastiness and slurring occurs from the non-believers to the believers.
I do not and should not be expected to have someone, in a space I and others treat in a scared manner, behave in a way that I feel is disrespectful. There has been little respect in any of these threads. That I have been singled out in this manner does not show that people want to learn. It looks more like a few hostile people want to vent their spleens en masse, and were far to fucking gutless to do it themselves. Mob mentality.

I saw the E-mails she sent you. They were quite reasonable. She used “foul language” several times, but nothing that even came CLOSE to the language you used against her when you were fighting.

I’d really like to see how people would change the accepted laws of physics to incorporate the existance of magick? Is it a manipulation of the particle/wave theory in quantum physics? (could explain why magick never seems to work in the presence of the sceptics’ evil Science that makes the fireballs collapse when you look at them ;)) Or do we need a complete overhaul of thousands of years of study? (not that that study’s been wrong before, but IMO it’s doing a good job of describing everything today)…

An interesting point you bring up. You might find the work of Peter Carroll along the lines of what you were thinking.
He combined chaos theory with magick. It’s a theory that I think deserves some exploring. You can find his work on amazon.com

I think this is an important question, becasue there are two major catagories of believers in the paranormal: on one hand, you get people who are overall rational, who accept that there are frauds and con-men out there, but do think there is this one paranormal activity that they cannot explain. I may think thise people are misguided on that one area, but they are people you can at least talk to. On the other hand, you have people who believe in everything. These people often serve as default support groups for each other’s delusions–“I promise to believe you if you promise to believe me.” Among these types, questioning of any type is horribly rude. You can’t talk to them.
It seems to me that the first type of believer in the paranormal would be a fan of Randi–after all, he is providing a valuble service by cutting through the bullshit to better expose the real stuff, eventually. It is only the people that have adopted the “I’ll belive you if you believe me” method of validation who fear the questioner.
So Hastur, are there any paranormal claims you suspect? Do you think that anyone out there is looking to make a buck by faking paranormal abilities? If you do, then why does the idea of a guy dedicated to exposing these frauds bother you?
It was a post of mine to which techchick reponded that was the cause of the most recent blowup between her and Hastur. As a result, techchick and I had a very nice email exchange where she was nothing but polite and reasonable. While this does not prove that she didn’t go looney tunes on Hastur, I did want to add my perspective.
Wrong, wrong, wrong! The burden of proof is always on the person taking the side of existence of a theory. It has nothing to do with who made the first statement in the arguemnt. Neither I nor anyone else can prove that magick is not real. It’s impossible. You can’t prove that I’m not really a 100 foot tall purple ape that takes human form whenever in the presence of nonbelievers. This is a basic point that can’t be escaped.
You have made a positive claim. I can only speak for myself. I don’t believe you. Magick just doesn’t square with what I understand and perceive to be true with the world. My mind is open if I can just see a little bit of proof. Will you prove it to me?
I have conceded, several times, that I cannot be the one that you will display your magic to. And I have asked, several times, who you would be willing to display said magic to. Are you so paranoid that you distrust everyone on the SDMB?
Hastur - I’m not looking to make a personal attack (seriously, I’m not). I’m not overly interested in magic. I don’t believe in it, and as far as I’m concerned it’s like religion… I ignore it.
However, you mentioned that you didn’t have to prove magic existed, rather that it was for others to disprove its existence. That’s not how it works… if I hopped into the ‘you’re a porn star’ thread and said ‘Yeah… I am a porn star, and I have a 14" johnson.’, it wouldn’t be up to the posters of that thread to disprove my claim. Someone could demand that I send a video box cover or something to prove my relatively outrageous claims. I wouldn’t expect the SDMB truth-police to show up at my house with a videocamera and rip my shorts off, finally showing that my dogged claims of being the proud owner of an uberschlong are falsified.
Not that my uberschlong claims are false, mind you.
